Informs Knox that Mr. Flint (possibly Royal Flint) will be delivering money to him towards the Reimbursement of the Two thousand and Five hundred dollars; lent for the Presidents household. Further discusses the transaction.
Writes that Knox's note becomes due this day but the man from the Bank has not called with it, prevented I suppose by the weather- of course I can not send it to you till Monday- I now send you one hundred and Seventy seven Dollars in Bank Paper. Declares that he will send the balance Monday.
Informs Duer that he will not be able to make their previous appointment as he cannot leave Philadelphia at this time due to some public business. Adds that he does not think this will disappoint Duer, though, because he understands that it is Duer's responsibility to finalize the arrangements with Madame de Leval and Mr. de la Roche. Docket is partially cut off.
Took the liberty of drawing 75 dollars from Knox. Will repay him in 2 or 3 months. Tells Knox the notes that William Bingham gave him are at too long sight to avail myself to raise any thing for the present Expense of my Family. Has no one but [Benjamin] Walker to ask aid from, and Duer claims he has asked too much from him lately. Needs about 300 pounds for his family to get by for three months. Wants to know if Knox will answer the draft of William Hill at 5 days sight for [dollar sign] 375. Also wants Knox to give Hill leave to draw another [dollar sign] 375 on 1 April. Pledges on his honor to pay it back in 6 months, if not sooner.
Reports that this letter will be delivered by a Mr. Amory, who is going to Philadelphia to enquire into the claims of the United States against D. Parker & Co. Amory is Parker's attorney, and he is anxious to settle these claims. Says he transmitted the vouchers relative to this account to Knox in his letter of 9 April. Wants Knox to give copies of these vouchers to Amory.
A short note informing Duer that he has received the note for the [dollar sign] 2,000. Docketed in Knox's hand.
Discusses his reasons for terminating his financial agreement with William Green and mentions other avenues he is considering. Notes he has made overtures to [Th?ophile] Cazenove, and after receiving Duer's pressing letters decided it best to try to push forward an agreement with [William] Bingham. Assures him he will do everything in his power to finalize a sale most advantageous to Duer. Notes Cazenove has offered to purchase one million [acres?] of the Kennebec and continues to discuss in detail the status of various other deals he is trying to negotiate on Duer's behalf.
Appears to discuss a business transaction involving Knox. Notes he will send his acknowledgement on both sums [of money?]. Wishes him good health and contentment.
Signed and initialed by Knox. This appears to be a copy of two letters that Knox sent to Duer on 17 June and 19 June. On June 19, Knox told Duer to pay a [dollar sign] 2,500 note 33 days after the date to the firm of Shaw and Randall. On June 17 he had told Duer to pay a [dollar sign] 2,500 note in 60 days. This document relates to the notes worth [dollar sign] 5,000 Knox has recently corresponded with Thomas Randall about (refer to GLC02437.05006).
