Professor Dr. Franz Ruppert is a professor of psychology in Munich, where he runs his own institute for further education and training, alongside his psychotherapy practice. He has presented his theory, and highly effective therapy method that accompanies it, in ten books so far, and these have been translated into twelve different languages. Professor Dr Franz Ruppert's latest book is part personal account and part an update of his theoretical thinking, specifically as it relates to our society. Identity-oriented Psychotraumatology Therapy (IoPT), developed by Professor Ruppert over the last 25 years, is established as a new way of thinking about trauma, and its influence on our individual lives, and now, this new book looks at its influence on society as a whole. We know through Professor Ruppert's work, that trauma, particularly traumas that happen at the very beginning of life, have a profound influence on the lives of most of us... and we are our society. All of our societal institutions, such as our political system, our legal and justice systems, our physical and mental health systems as they currently are, are made up of us and people like us, and so have an influence on our lives, that often is in fact traumatising. Professor Ruppert makes a specific focus on the dynamics of perpetration and victimisation as the cyclic forces that hold us in a continually traumatising and re-traumatising world that it is hard to step away from. However to recognise within ourselves our ability to function as a perpetrator, as a way of not connecting with our trauma, brings us to a responsibility for our place in society and our connection with others, and is beneficial for our own well-being. At the end of the book Ruppert discusses the idea of having a clear psyche, and thereby connecting with others who also work with their traumas to clear their psyches, and suggests that by this means we can create the society that we want.
No longer are threats to security and their impact on individuals a matter for the authorities alone – a holistic view is now essential. From grass roots to policy level, all of us must be involved, take responsibility, make informed decisions and undertake appropriate actions. This is particularly important if we are to succeed in redressing the potential negative impact of the psychosocial consequences of trauma in children and adolescents in countries in transition, emerging from conflict, or victim of terrorist incidents. There are many more young people who need appropriate help to come to terms with what they are suffering than there are mental health professionals. Many people could learn the skills to ensure that today’s young people realise their full potential as well-balanced adults, willing and able not only to commit themselves to social development and security for their own country but also to focus on respect and understanding to ensure international peace and security. This publication wants to establish long-term and sustainable strategies of practical activities which mothers, fathers, teachers – any concerned member of the community - can be trained to undertake in order to complement the work of mental-health professionals to prevent trauma and to deal with its consequences in children and adolescents as victims, witnesses and perpetrators of the violence of the new security threats. Preliminary work was undertaken to develop international guidelines for implementing effective measures to help young people regain their well-being and become future actors for respect, understanding and peace.

This book provides an overview of recent trends in the management of trauma and post-traumatic stress disorders that may ensue from distressing experiences associated with the process of migration. Although the symptoms induced by trauma are common to all cultures, their specific meaning and the strategies used to deal with them may be culture-specific. Consequently, cultural factors can play an important role in the diagnosis and treatment of individuals with psychological reactions to extreme stress. This role is examined in detail, with an emphasis on the need for therapists to bear in mind that different cultures often have different concepts of health and disease and that cross-cultural communication is therefore essential in ensuring effective care of the immigrant patient. The therapist’s own intercultural skills are highlighted as being an important factor in the success of any treatment and specific care contexts and the global perspective are also discussed.
