A beautifully illustrated picture book about what happens at night time by a Booker shortlisted author. There's a whole world of activity out there while we're asleep in our beds, from bakers preparing bread and cakes and firefighters waiting patiently for a call, to hospitals caring for those who are ill and postal workers sorting our mail. There is also wildlife such as foxes foraging, bats flying, and owls hunting for prey. And around the world there are children who are playing, learning, eating, and reading while we're tucked up asleep. Perfect for bedtime, this book opens up a whole world of wonder and imagination for children and provides solace if they wake in the early hours. In his first children's book, illustrator John Broadley works in a limited palette, moving from soft dusk colors to warm dawn tones.
In Tim Cowgill book it tells the story of a middle-aged man who sets off on a journey back to Ireland to attend the funeral of an old friend. On the journey he reads a journal that a younger self wrote recounting his difficult childhood and the pain of growing up. The older reader is taken back to his childhood traumas through the journal which recalls events in the years from 1969 through to the year 1981. The journal is littered with musical references that the middle-aged reader uses to make strong connections between his modern life and the life of the writer. This connection is further reinforced by a trip back to the country of his birth, Ireland. The reader is invited to remember their own youth through regular mentions of significant events and important music of the time; the 60s, the 70s and the 80s.
For someone like Joyce, who was getting back into horses after a 40 year absence, finding the new, which is really reinventing the old, information on horse gentling was like making that discovery as a 6 year old that pollywogs turn into frogs. Now trainers speak of gentling the horse, not breaking it. We as people are becoming caring individuals who honor animals as the Native American’s did, as little sister and little brother. We are also finding that animals, in turn assist our growth and keep us in balance. The main theme of It's Hard to Stay on a Horse While You're Unconscious is the journey of mother and daughter into acquiring horses, and their resultant experiences. In It's Hard to Stay on a Horse While You're Unconscious we are traveling into a wild land, for in life we rarely know what lies beyond that next turning of the canyon walls. If we follow the Chapter Headings, though, we will have some guidelines, “Watch for Lions, Dodge Wildfires, Get a Horse, Stampede with a Mustang.” The trailblazing aspect of It's Hard to Stay on a Horse While You're Unconscious lies in it appendices. When Joyce noted that a horse needs trained on both sides, or a foal, when imprinted, needs to be massaged all over, she hypothesized that it had something to do with the Corpus callosum, which is the bridge between the two brain hemispheres. When studying the brain, she discovered it is first necessary to understand how a horse sees. Thus, following the narrative is a bit of science, an Appendix on The Eye, and one on The Brain.
Where do I begin with this review? I think I should take my sisters advice and repeat what she often tells me: If I cant say amen, just say ouch. Keeping that in mind, Im over here saying ouch because author Toni L. Wortherly is on my toe stomping pretty hard with this petite but powerful book. As a single Christian woman combating some of the issues of loneliness and frustration associated with living a single life, this book speaks volumes to me. There is nothing like reading what youre going through to let the reader know they are not alone on this journey. As Ive pledged my life to following the tenants of my faith, its good to have confirmation, in the form of a book, which I can reference from time to time. Ill admit that Im not crazy about the title; I dont like to be referred to as prey or as the hunted. The Word of God says: He that finds a wife, finds a good thing so a loose translation would mean that I am prey. I would hope that my mate wouldnt refer to me in this manner. The translation would also imply that Im weak or defenseless; I feel that Im a strong vessel, who patiently awaits capture. Pray While Youre Prey is a great read for single women. Those of us who have the desire to be spiritually grounded in all that we do, can draw strength from the scripture, interpretation and study questions found at the end of each chapter. This is a book to share with your entire cadre of single sister friends as we journey down the path to closeness with God and the quest to be a virtuous woman and wife.
Whether he was trying to geld a spooked stallion in a blizzard or found himself in the middle of an all-out fracas involving a monkey's abscessed tooth and a shotgun, he took it in stride, with great affection for both his four-legged patients and his two-legged clients.
This book holds 9 stories—not drawn from my own experiences, but from whispers I’ve heard, passed down through time like dark secrets. I can’t tell you where they came from or how they began, but they’ve haunted me, and now they will haunt you. I haven’t named each story because, by the end, I want you to give them a name—a name born from the fear that lingers after you’ve finished reading. But as you do, make sure to check behind you… because someone is always there, watching. I dedicate this book to those who have passed on—the ones you still feel close to, the ones whose presence never truly left. And you know what? Right now… They’re all sitting next to you.
