Taya Eleven sorority sisters. Eleven weddings. And I’m in every one of them. Always a bridesmaid and not a groom in sight for me. Well, I’ve had it with this. It’s time for this bridesmaid to break loose from the pitying looks and have some fun. Enter Angus McGuffin. I’ve seen Mr. Hottie McScottish Hottie at every wedding. We’ve exchanged words, flirty words, but never acted on them. This time, I’m taking him down. To the mattress. The “wedding of the century” won’t be about me standing up. It’ll be about me going down and hooking up. Angus Thank God. What? You thought I’d say no? Pfft.
Astutely observed and deftly witty, One Perfect Day masterfully mixes investigative journalism and social commentary to explore the workings of the wedding industry-an industry that claims to be worth $160 billion to the U.S. economy and which has every interest in ensuring that the American wedding becomes ever more lavish and complex. Taking us inside the workings of the wedding industry-including the swelling ranks of professional event planners, department stores with their online registries, the retailers and manufacturers of bridal gowns, and the Walt Disney Company and its Fairy Tale Weddings program-New Yorker writer Rebecca Mead skillfully holds the mirror up to the bride's deepest hopes and fears about her wedding day, revealing that for better or worse, the way we marry is who we are.
PLEASE NOTE: The initial printing of this book contains the following glitch. Pages 19 & 20 speak about an exercise involving 5 steps. The steps should read in the sequential order of 1,2,3,4,5 - instead of how the book printed the steps (1,2,1,2,3). Marriage doesn’t create problems, it reveals problems. The problems each spouse bring to a marriage will be the problems of the marriage. Solve yourself and you greatly enhance the odds of enjoying a fulfilling and lasting marriage. Whether a couple is attracted to each other because of looks, or personality, or other factors, it would stand to reason that wedded bliss would be the expected outcome. But that quite often is not the case: Even Captain and Tennille, a pop duo from my younger years, captured the nation’s attention by singing of their committed love in the song, “Love Will Keep Us Together,” yet ended up divorcing after thirty-nine years of marriage. Why did this duo, in addition to a myriad of others, fail in marriage? James Dubbs, who has been involved in ministry for more than fifty years as a youth and family pastor, has in his book uncovered why so many marriages fail. You’re invited to examine yourself to understand how you may be contributing unwittingly to damaging conflict in your relationship. Consider questions such as: • What does it mean, and how does a spouse “solve” oneself? • What conditions can overtake love and doom a marriage? • What part does the hidden power of contempt play in a broken marriage? • What actions must you take in seeking to prevent marital love from turning sour? Whether you’re thinking about getting married, struggling in a marriage, or simply want to do everything you can to ensure your love remains vibrant and strong, this book is steeped with wisdom from the Bible and life experience to help you achieve that end.
Scumble River's school psychologist Sky Denison might have to put her wedding on hold when the town's sexy new librarian is murdered and list of suspects keeps stacking up. The town’s sexy new librarian, Yvonne Osborn, has just been murdered, and the list of suspects is piling up faster than late fees on an overdue book. Yvonne’s strict sense of right and wrong annoyed some townspeople and infuriated others. Did her high standards lead to her death? Skye is distracted by worries about what havoc the crazy Dooziers will wreak on her wedding day and whether she’ll fit into her dress. But Skye can’t afford to leave any page unturned because unless she works quickly to expose the scheming killer, her happy ending may be put on permanent hold.…
This book is the result of some 40 years of teaching adult Sunday School classes. The format, inspired by the writings of Thomas Aquinas, evolved while working with Senior Adults. They were dedicated to the Sunday School process both in their attendance and in study preparations for the class. Many of them had difficulty reading the scriptures from their Bibles so I began to type the text in a 14, bold font so they could participate in the teaching process. When some missed classes due to illness or other events, they would often get discouraged about not having been there. That is when I began to print out the lessons each week as they were to be taught. Following that, the homebound came into play and requested copies of lessons because attending members had lent them theirs. Members began to send copies to their friends, neighbors and relatives. One of the extended recipients participated in a Jail ministry in her home church and began forwarding her copies to her inmate. After the jailers read the lessons, they were passed on to the inmate who then shared them with her cell block. From there, her lesson was mailed to her Aunt. God was getting a lot of mileage out of each of His lessons!
