A volume of reports commissioned for the Joint Intelligence Sub-Committee (JIC). The JIC was formed of representatives from the intelligence services, the armed services, and the Foreign Office. Its purpose was to assess military, security, and foreign policy requirements and coordinate Britain's intelligence organisations accordingly. A vast range of international and domestic issues are investigated and analysed in the JIC's reports. Subjects covered in this file include the impact of fighting on the Eastern Front on German military strength; Allied and Axis strategy in Italy, the Balkans, and South East Asia; the possibility and strategic consequences of an armistice between Germany and the Soviet Union; the investigation of German secret weapons; attempts to persuade Turkey to enter the war on the Allied side; German manpower; the Axis oil situation, and the vulnerability of Romanian oil fields to attacks from newly-captured Italian airfields; and the effects of the Allied bombing of Germany.
