Oaths, vows, promises, curses - all share family resemblances. They are performatives, carrying illocutionary force. Oaths have rightly been termed, "conditional self-curses", promises have been argued to be but a more developed form of vows, and oaths and vows are often used interchangeably. This book focuses on private vows and oaths including those publically proclaimed. Through analysis of legal, liturgical, mythical and literary works, it seeks to uncover a phenomenology of oaths and vows. Viewing oaths and vows as the human creative force par excellence, it surveys their role in circumscribing and directing both erotic desire and aggression; and so - in their performative function - as standing at the foundation of society and sociability. As acts of trust which establish new obligations understandings of the role of oaths and vows are compared in the Jewish and Christian contexts, in terms of the importance of intentionality in vow making and oath taking, as well as the nature of the obligations ensuing from such locutionary acts. Analysis of the comic and tragic consequences of the violation of marriage oaths as presented in European literature from the 12th to 19th centuries reveals their perception as "habituating" Eros.
Trust is central to our social lives. We know by trusting what others tell us. We act on that basis, and on the basis of trust in their promises and implicit commitments. So trust underpins both epistemic and practical cooperation and is key to philosophical debates on the conditions of its possibility. It is difficult to overstate the significance of these issues. On the practical side, discussions of cooperation address what makes society possible-of how it is that life is not a Hobbesian war of all against all. On the epistemic side, discussions of cooperation address what makes the pooling of knowledge possible-and so the edifice that is science. But trust is not merely central to our lives instrumentally; trusting relations are themselves of great value, and in trusting others, we realise distinctive forms of value. What are these forms of value, and how is trust central to our lives? These questions are explored and developed in this volume, which collects fifteen new essays on the philosophy of trust. They develop and extend existing philosophical discussion of trust and will provide a reference point for future work on trust.

The Journey of The Silent Vow primarily takes an intelligent and healthy boy through the experience of a drug cult world where his physical and mental health, are taken for granted. There was nothing wrong with the life given to this boy, yet the feelings received from the consumption of drugs and alcohol were more important than the boys own safety. Through use and abuse, this boy forfeited his wellbeing as he subjects his life to trials and tribulations. Violations of the established legal system brought to life correctional facilities, psychiatric institutions, and reformatory schools. As he violated others he left passages and ways for others to violate him. As intelligent as he was he brought all his lessons to be learned into his existence. Although this story is told with 25 years of Hindsight, in those 25 years of psychological understandings lessons of how to cope and deal with life were included in every step of the story. If we as adults could only have had the wisdom when we were experiencing our lives as children our worlds would all be different places?
