Excerpt from Butter as a Source of Vitamin an in the Diet of the People of the United States: By the Technical Committee in Charge of the Nation-Wide Survey A Nation-wide study to determine the seasonal variation in the vitamin A potency of milk and butter produced and marketed in different regions of the United States was begun in the spring of 1943 by the United States Department of Agriculture and 21 cooperating State agricultural experiment stations to answer certain questions raised by the Committee on Food and Nutrition of the National Research Council. The Committee (now the Food and Nutrition Board) wanted to be able to estimate how much vitamin A the people of the United States were actually getting from the butter they were consuming. This publication brings together the results obtained up to and including August 1945, as reported by each of the cooperating States to the Technical Committee that was in charge of the study.
