When I was in Indian Air Force and flying in the chopper, the pilot planned sorties primarily based on assumptions. Taking off at the helipad, landed at the destination place, and gave room for an emergency landing if something went wrong. He covered all the checkpoints before taking off, but he knew that all the identical decisions would be made on the way.
