Digitalization of Work brings together researchers and international experts whose work and practices are based on a variety of disciplines such as work and organizational psychology, social psychology, ergonomics, communication and information sciences, and management sciences. This book closely examines the challenges associated with recent or emerging ways of working related to the digitalization of work. This text presents a selection of contributions to the Sixth European Congress of Work and Organizational Psychology held in Alicante (Spain) in April 1993, some of which have been previously published in the European Work and Organizational Psychologist. The contributions selected to appear in this volume focus on some of the principal questions scholars and professionals concerned with work and organizational psychology are tackling in Europe. The range of topics, theoretical approaches, methodologies, and orientations discussed illustrate the richness and variety of ideas currently studied in the discipline. Although they are not the only ones, the areas discussed present important trends and interests within the discipline. TECHNOLOGICAL CHANGES AND HUMAN RESOURCES SET Coordinated by Patrick Gilbert The accelerating pace of technological change (AI, cobots, immersive reality, connected objects, etc.) calls for a profound reexamination of how we conduct business. And given the fast-paced, goal-driven nature of modern society, engagement in action is also central to how we perceive ourselves. Action has traditionally been viewed as an end product of the counseling process, but now a bold new redefinition makes counseling not only a driver of action, but an action in itself. Based on a symposium held by the European Network of Work and Organizational Psychologists (ENOP) in Homburg, West Germany, April 1987. Contributors address the impact of information technology on training, especially the advent of new tools for training, and advances in control over the training process. Discussed is training for the new types of skills IT equipment requires of its users--notable is the growing need for cognitive skills rather than more traditional perceptual and motor skills. Also considered are job-aid support, person-machine function allocation, job design, and the growing need to incorporate the training provision into the system design process.
Under the influence of cognitivism, explanations in everyday life constitute a major research theme in social psychology today. Studies are divided into two large domains: those of "locus of control" and causal attribution approaches. Work and organizational psychologists have not hesitated to take an interest in this research. They have made use of it to enrich their own investigations: thus the classical models of organizational psychology such as leadership and motivation have given way to explanation processes. But the study of these processes has also contributed to shedding light on the actions of practitioners. Explanations are in fact at the heart of many practices of work and organizational social psychology. They play a part in situations of recruitment, assessment, organizational consultation, and so on. This special issue will aim to present a synthesis of the large body of research devoted to "explanations in organizations".
