Total Energy discusses the process of generating power where it is wanted and to use the waste heat for useful purposes. The book is comprised of 12 chapters that provide a comprehensive discussion of the various aspects of total energy. The text first introduces the concept of total energy, and then proceeds to detailing the principal prime movers used in total energy production. The next chapters cover steam turbines and governors systems for industrial steam turbo-alternators. Next, the book talks about open- and closed-cycle gas turbines. The next three chapters tackle fuel cell, refrigeration and district heating. Chapter 11 examines the existing total energy schemes in North America, while Chapter 12 presents an economic assessment of total energy. The book will be of great interest to researchers and professionals in the energy industry.
Follow the journey of a Canadian and Indian couple, Savannah and Sandeep, as they travel the world to capture the human side of one of the biggest energy transitions of our times - the global shift from fossil fuels to renewables. In this exciting and provocative new book, readers are taken into the homes of the coal miners who live and work in Jharia, a town in India that has been on fire for the past 100 years due to poor coal mining practices. Life in Jharia is a version of Dante's inferno - 700,000 people live in the most unimaginable conditions. Yet even though residents of Jharia say they are dying slowly every day, they also say they'll never leave. Almost 11,000 kilometres away, in the Canadian oil sands, workers and indigenous people similarly describe their complex relationship with the industry that employs them. Although fossil fuel extraction is harming the environment and impacting people's way of life in the oil sands region, a much-needed shift to renewable energy could also leave communities without their livelihoods. Written in the form of a travelogue, Total Transition provides a whirlwind look at the global growth of renewable energy - highlighting exciting developments in solar and wind energy in Canada, India, Africa and Europe, and discussing hurdles standing in the way of a total transition. Energy experts and leaders of innovative renewable energy projects share hope and optimism about the future of fossil fuel workers and their communities in an increasingly renewable world.
Quantities of all forms of energy consumed for collection and treatment of municipal wastewater are estimated. Heat energy is equated to electrical energy by a conversion factor of 10,500 Btu/kwh. Total energy consumption, expressed as kwh/mg of wastewater treated, ranges from 2300-3700 kwh/mg. Energy used for construction of the treatment plant and the sewerage system represents 35-55% of the total energy consumed. The remainder used for plant operation is predominately (65-75%) electrical energy. The use of high efficiency aeration devices combined with good maintenance practices appears to offer the best opportunity for conservation of energy within the plant. Recovery of energy from the sludge produced at the plant can be accomplished by anaerobically digesting the sludge and using the digester gas as fuel for internal combustion engines. In large plants, when the sludge is sufficiently dewatered, it is also possible to recover energy by incinerating the dewatered sludge with production of steam in a waste heat boiler. The steam can then be used within the plant or expanded through a steam turbine to produce mechanical or electrical energy.
