Twenty-two powerful messages from women of God are assembled in this collection of sermons. Those Sisters Can Preach! is a treasured volume from some of the most revered African-American women preachers today. Their distinct voices from varied ministries blend together in one proclamation of wisdom and hope. McKenzie has joined these women of faith together through their conviction and commitment to the gospel. Each pearl of wisdom speaks volumes.
Encompassing themes ranging from racial and gender discrimination in the church and society to the tenets of their shared theology, their sermons reveal women of great faith, courage, and wisdom. Dr. Collier-Thomas provides the reader with vital background information about these women's lives, their theology, and the issues that moved them to preach. In addition to a broad historical overview, she discusses the specific circumstances of each preacher and gives insightful analysis of her sermons.
Many of us have big questions about God that the Christian faith seems to leave unanswered. But what if that tension is exactly where faith comes alive? Paradoxology boldly claims that the paradoxes that seem to undermine belief are actually the heart of our vibrant faith, and it is only by continually wrestling with them that God is most clearly revealed.
Four women seeking the promise of salvation and prosperity in a new land.
For nearly two millennia, despite repeated prohibitions, Christian women have preached. Some have preached in official settings; others have found alternative routes for expression. Prophecy, teaching, writing, and song have all filled a broad definition of preaching. This anthology, with essays by an international group of scholars from several disciplines, investigates the diverse voices of Christian women who claimed the authority to preach and prophesy. The contributors examine the centuries of arguments, grounded in Pauline injunctions, against women's public speech and the different ways women from the early years of the church through the twentieth century have nonetheless exercised religious leadership in their communities. Some of them based their authority solely on divine inspiration; others were authorized by independent-minded communities; a few were even recognized by the church hierarchy. With its lively accounts of women preachers and prophets in the Christian tradition, this exceptionally well-documented collection will interest scholars and general readers alike.
Yes, Women Do Preach! is a book about the author's personal testimony and journey into her life as a woman minister, in a world that was predominately male populated at the time of her calling. Since that time, a vast number of women have accepted their calling into the ministry; yet, they still encounter many unnecessary obstacles. It is her hope that this book will enable men and women of God to come together and work in God's vineyard that souls may be saved. The author is trying to give a voice to the voiceless women who are somehow afraid to step out from behind the world of preconceived notions and ideology and do what the Lord says. We must put on the garment of praise, lift up holy hands and give God the praise, for He is able to sustain us. Be encouraged!
