The expedited globalised process of exchange and new forms of cultural production have transformed old established notions of identity, calling into question their conceptual foundations. This book explores the spatial and representational dimension of this phenomenon, by addressing how the reshaping of the key themes of place, architecture and memory are altering the nature, as well as, our understanding of identity. Cutting across boundaries, the book drives discussion of identity beyond the well-worn concern for its loss within a globalised context, and importantly provides links between identity, place, memory and representation in architecture. Examining a range of case studies from Australia, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, Poland, Puerto Rico, Turkey and Singapore, as well as with contributions cutting across geographical and temporal boundaries, this volume addresses such issues as architecture technology, place and memory – critical issues in the monitoring and mapping of identity shift within a rapidly globalising context. Performing Identities and Utopias of Belonging consists of sixteen essays, reflecting the current conflicted debate on the ontology, constructiveness and affect of categories of ascribed social identity such as gender, ethnicity, race and nation, in the context of British, Irish and North American cultural landscapes. They address the many ways in which these communities of belonging are imagined, iterated, performed, questioned, and deconstructed in literature, cinema and visual culture; they also support or counter claims about the enhanced value of social identity in the expression of the self in the light of the present debates that surround the contested post-identity turn in cultural studies. Significantly, they also address the role of social identity in the field of utopian and dystopian thought, focusing on the projection of imagined futures where alternative means of conceiving ascribed identity are conceptualized. The contributions are shaped by a plurality of approaches and theoretical discourses, and come from both established and emerging scholars and researchers from Europe and beyond. The collection is structured in three sections – the politics of (un)belonging, deconstructing utopian and cultural paradigms, and performing identities in the visual arts – which organize the multidisciplinary discussions around specific nuclei of interrogations.

Revealing a vibrant and intertwined artistic scene in the Balkans On the Very Edge brings together fourteen empirical and comparative essays about the production, perception, and reception of modernity and modernism in the visual arts, architecture, and literature of interwar Serbia (1918–1941). The contributions highlight some idiosyncratic features of modernist processes in this complex period in Serbian arts and society, which emerged ‘on the very edge’ between territorial and cultural, new and old, modern and traditional identities. This volume contains the proceedings of the virtual conference on Cyclic Cohomology at 40: Achievements and Future Prospects, held from September 27–October 1, 2021 and hosted by the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences, Toronto, ON, Canada. Cyclic cohomology, since its discovery forty years ago in noncommutative differential geometry, has become a fundamental mathematical tool with applications in domains as diverse as analysis, algebraic K-theory, algebraic geometry, arithmetic geometry, solid state physics and quantum field theory. The reader will find survey articles providing a user-friendly introduction to applications of cyclic cohomology in such areas as higher categorical algebra, Hopf algebra symmetries, de Rham-Witt complex, quantum physics, etc., in which cyclic homology plays the role of a unifying theme. The researcher will find frontier research articles in which the cyclic theory provides a computational tool of great relevance. In particular, in analysis cyclic cohomology index formulas capture the higher invariants of manifolds, where the group symmetries are extended to Hopf algebra actions, and where Lie algebra cohomology is greatly extended to the cyclic cohomology of Hopf algebras which becomes the natural receptacle for characteristic classes. In algebraic topology the cyclotomic structure obtained using the cyclic subgroups of the circle action on topological Hochschild homology gives rise to remarkably significant arithmetic structures intimately related to crystalline cohomology through the de Rham-Witt complex, Fontaine's theory and the Fargues-Fontaine curve.
The Poincaré Seminar is held twice a year at the Institut Henri Poincaré in Paris. This volume contains the lectures of the 2002 seminars. The resumes of these sections were provided by Wendy Matthews, Dominik Bonatz, and Diederik J.W. Meijer. The contributions cover many aspects of the main themes through time, from the Neolithic to the Hellenistic / Roman period, and offer interdisciplinary approaches to complex archaeological problems.
Combinatorics and Reasoning: Representing, Justifying and Building Isomorphisms is based on the accomplishments of a cohort group of learners from first grade through high school and beyond, concentrating on their work on a set of combinatorics tasks.
