The Magic Walking Stick is a children's short story by John Buchan. It tells the story of a teenage boy who buys a walking stick from a beggar - a magic walking stick that allows the boy to visit many places at his command...
William Walkingstick stumbles upon a magical land that includes an enchanted forest, woodsmen, and faeries. The first person he meets is a gentle giant, Eril, who wants to introduce him to his town. But instead of fellow giants, he points to his hat, which William discovers includes a miniature community. Eril explains that the hat town's "bitties" make tasty treats called doppums, and there are some other giants with such hats, too. These giants protect the bitties and help them see the world--enjoying the doppums in return. But the giants and bitties must always be on the lookout for Egad the Terrible, who steals hat towns so he can sell the doppums at his own market. William cannot stand by without doing anything: He seeks to rescue the hat towns that have been stolen. With a little help from Eril, a lion-hearted bittie, a wayward faerie, and other new friends, William seeks to overcome his fears. He'll need to discover the true meaning of bravery to have any chance of saving the bitties.
Poor Margaret is waking up to another bad day. Ever since her parents died, her brother and sister have made her sweep the floors, chop the wood, cook the meals, feed the pigs, and anything else they can think to demand. Just as she is wondering how she will survive, she comes upon an old lady with a very sad story: a dog has run off with her walking stick, and she can’t do a thing without it. When the old lady promises Margaret a reward of three gold coins for its safe return, the girl readily agrees. Little does Margaret know that the old lady is really a witch, her reward a trick, and her walking stick a magic stick the witch has used to make a thousand miserable wishes come true . . .

The stick is a universal toy. Totally natural, all-purpose, free, it offers limitless opportunities for outdoor play and adventure and it provides a starting point for an active imagination and the raw material for transformation into almost anything! As New York's Strong National Museum of Play pointd out when they selected a stick for inclusion in their National Toy Hall of Fame, 'It can be a Wild West horse, a medieval knight's sword, a boat on a stream, or a slingshot with a rubber band . . .' In this book Fiona Danks and Jo Schofield offer masses of suggestions for things to do with a stick, in the way of adventures and bushcraft, creative and imaginative play, games, woodcraft and conservation, music and more.

He has a crush, but he can’t speak when she’s around. He’s been this shy and stubborn - the dragon would say a brat - since his father died and his best friend, Arvin, moved a continent away. Arvin Pewter is a little person with wild, red hair. He’s smart, witty, loves science and girls in nearly equal proportions, but he hates being called “Chipmunk” for his size. It’s been a long two years living with his grandmother in Ireland. He couldn’t wait to go home to see his old friend Perry. Perhaps, they never were. Now, Arvin’s back for good! And he wants to rekindle their friendship. The Dragon thinks it’s a good idea, too, and insists Perry leave to meet his friend at the pool.
