Traditionally, physicians have used medications, therapy, and other treatments to help treat and manage mental health and depression (Fusar-Poli et al., 2019). Some physicians are now seeking more holistic and integrated mental health strategies to help support the management of depression for their patients (Unützer & Park, 2012). One such integrated strategy is being explored at a large, urban health and science center. The health and science center's physician team seeks to include therapeutic horticulture (TH) in their mental health programming and offer TH as an integrated health strategy to support their patients with management of depression. The urban health and science center wanted to develop a partnership with a public garden to be the site for the new TH program initiative and sought horticultural expertise for the program design. The team approached a horticulturist at the largest public garden in their area, and that horticulturist became the researcher of this study. Horticulture can be used as a therapeutic modality for people with physical, mental, emotional, and social disabilities (Simson & Straus, 1998). The purpose of this research study was to investigate the process of establishing a TH program in a public garden setting and use the data to design the TH program. The American Horticulture Therapy Association (AHTA) is the most widely accepted professional group (AHTA, 2023) and the research questions created for this study were guided by the AHTA Professional Standards. The overarching research question was: Through what means do TH programs align with the AHTA Standards of Professional Practice? From the knowledge gained from a phenomenological multi-case case study and the participants experiences within the therapeutic horticulture professional field, the researcher was able to synthesize the data collected and estimate associated activities for each aspect of the logic mode design. From the research results, a logic model was developed to portray step-by-step relationships between planned work (processes) and intended results (outcomes) for the local TH program initiative. The researcher is grateful for the time and patience of participants in the study and for teaching new ideas, concepts, and sharing what they love about the TH field. The results of this research study provided an appropriate course of action to supports the physician team's intent to provide integrative health care for their patients as well as contributing new knowledge and perspective within the horticulture therapy profession.
