This compilation reflects the increasing desire amongst practitioners of the great world religions to find the universal wisdom that underlies their diverse philosophies and beliefs. It consists of extracts from the sacred scriptures of Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Islam and Christianity.
Craig G. Bartholomew and Ryan P. O'Dowd provide an informed introduction to the Old Testament wisdom books Proverbs, Ecclesiastes and Job. More than an introduction, however, this is a thoughtful consideration of the hermeneutical implications of this literature.
In the course of time, it has become increasingly difficult for human beings to get along. Somehow each one of us has been exposed to a level of animosity, misunderstandings, false accusations, betrayals, and deceptions. The shame of this situation is the fact that, for the most part, it comes from people we love and who are very close to us: friends, family members, coworkers, and so on. Thus, throughout the present book, which is the first volume, we try to bring sparks of light on certain dark spots that we presume are responsible for triggering misfortunate thoughts and behaviors in human beings. Those dark spots are the vehicles through which are conducted ungratefulness, delusion, frustration, and anger. Inattention to the expressions of our own mind and insensibility to the expressions of our body favor the elaboration and the enlargement of darkness within us. Then our presentation is a juxtaposition of philosophical concepts and philanthropic approaches centered on gaining more knowledge and mastering of self. In brief, we propose a metaphysical learning of who we are as human beings. This will lead to the concourse of the universal wisdom, which is the authentic wisdom. Once initiated, we need to apply it to ourselves and share it with others through actions of quietness, of tolerance, of love, of gratefulness, and of happiness. It is above all sectarian faith and beliefs, and it is beyond politics and religions; it is simply the liberation of the thoughts from vanity, prejudice, bigotry, envy, disdain, indulgence, and wretchedness.
The purpose of One Heart is to illuminate the common sacred ground at the heart of seven faiths: Buddhism, Christianity, Confucianism, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism, and Taoism. Its method is to identify 65 essential principles, among them: Feel what other people feel; Don't harm others; Lead with virtue and concern for others; Be honest; Practice what you preach; Be content; Don't let anger take over; Choose your companions wisely; Accept the existence of spiritual beings; Seek and you will find. Illustrating each principle are one, two, or three quotations (adding up to more than 600) from a wide variety of texts sacred to each of the seven faiths--including the Old and New Testaments, the Talmud, the Mahabarata, the Tao Te Ching, the Bhagavad Gita, the Analects of Confucius, and many other sacred sources. In addition, each chapter also provides guidance on a spiritual theme or practice--prayer beads, a home altar, labyrinth walking--to enhance our understanding of these wise words and universal principles.

Universal Wisdom is an entertaining, unique, and thoughtful guide to life. Battling his own challenges, Benoit Chartier spent ten years of his life writing this book as way to help guide his children through the highs and lows of existence on this planet. In a no-holds-barred dialogue, Benoit addresses love, hate, religion, drugs, philosophy, social economics, the universe itself, and our part in keeping it all together, to name a few. He tackles issues that most people think, but are afraid to talk about, and makes one take stock of their own lives. Although the book was originally intended as a 'handbook to life' for his children, this is a must read for everyone.
Robert Alter's bold new translation of the "wisdom books" of the Old Testament.
