Excerpt from The Steam Turbine That the steam turbine is likely to be extensively used in the future is admitted by most engineers; but, although a good deal has lately been written about this type of engine. Excerpt from Steam-Turbines IN presenting this third edition the writer wishes to call attention to the new problems in the design of the Curtis and the Parsons types of turbine, to the suggestions regarding tur bine analysis, and to the Diagram of Heat-contents of Steam, the superheated region of which is plotted from the results of the writer's recent investigation of the specific heat of super heated This diagram is laid out as suggested by Dr. Mollier, the co-ordinates being Entropy, and Total Heat-contents and is exceedingly convenient because heat-units are read on straight lines instead of on curves as in the Temperature entropy Diagram. The present edition contains also new mat erial relating to the application of steam-turbines to marine propulsion, including illustrations of some of the most recent turbine steamers. The object of the book is, as before, to set forth the principles essential to those who wish to equip themselves for taking up steam-turbine work. Only such details relating to present practice in turbine construction have been given, therefore, as would suffice to illustrate the application of the principles. Excerpt from Steam Turbines: A Practical and Theoretical Treatise for Engineers and Designers, Including a Discussion of the Gas Turbine The steam turbine is the most modern as well as the most ancient steam motor. Recently its development has gone by leaps and bounds; and, above all, in its applications it is gaining ground daily. Doubtless it is to be the most important prime mover of the near future. Excerpt from Turbines With this object, I have, in the fourth and sixth chapters of Part I, awarded to questions of blade design, and to other details of like importance in the construction of steam turbines and of water turbines, a rather more intimate consideration than some readers may consider necessary. The pages are in the reader's hand to turn when he will. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Steam Turbine: Thesis The next turbine, capable of any practical development, and which may be regarded as the forerunner of the De Laval turbine, was invented by Bianca in 1629. It consisted simply of a jet of steam impinging upon the vanes of a paddle wheel and blowing it around. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Steam-Turbine Principles and Practice Steam-turbine principles and practice has been pre pared, for the practical man, to furnish this information. It has been written to provide the operating engineer, the plant superintendent, or manager with such steam-turbine information as he requires in his everyday work. The aim has been'to treat only topics of two general classes: (1) Those with which a man must be familiar to insure the successful and economical Operation of steam turbines. (2) Those a knowledge of which is necessary to enable a man - one who is not familiar with the details of its design or theory - to make a wise choice if he contemplates the purchase of a turbine. Only sufficient theory is given to insure a sound understanding of the principles Of turbine operation. The design of turbines is not treated at all. A working knowledge of arithmetic will enable one to read the book intelligently. Drawings for nearly all of the 282 illustrations were made especially for this work. It has been the endeavor to so design and render these pictures that they will convey the desired information with a minimum of supplementary discussion. Excerpt from Steam Turbines and Turbo-Compressors: Their Design and Construction There is a need, the author believes, for a book on Steam Turbines which shall not be simply a popular description of existing machines, nor yet a mathematical treatise, and which shall not be a mere compilation from the patent records.'
