If we are to talk about a new intellectual movement, the question is begged: what happened to the old intellectual movement? What happened to the thinkers who inspired and led our struggle against colonialism, apartheid and exploitation? What has happened to the thinkers who gave substance and guidance and, in many cases, practical leadership to our attempts to undo the past and forge a new future? In pursuit of answers to these questions, the Mapungubwe Institute for Strategic Reflection (MISTRA), in partnership with the Liliesleaf Trust, hosted a roundtable in March 2015 with the theme The Role of Intellectuals in the State-Society Nexus. Inputs were provided by a range of thinkers, including Ibbo Mandaza, Ben Turok, Ari Sitas, Ayanda Ntsaluba, Xolela Mangcu, Joel Netshitenzhe, Tshilidzi Marwala and Nomboniso Gasa, as well as provocative and piercing contributions from the attendees. This publication aims to put the inputs and debates at the roundtable further into the public domain, and simply records the contributions of the main speakers, the respondents, as well as the discussion from the floor. The rigorous debate at the roundtable spilled out of the boundaries of the event itself and encouraged a number of thinkers to provide additional material for this publication: Z. Pallo Jordan, David Moore (with Tshilidzi Marwala) and Desiree Lewis.
This volume offers an unprecedented account of recent and future developments in the sociology of intellectuals. It presents a critical exchange between two leading contemporary social theorists, Patrick Baert and Simon Susen, advancing debates at the cutting edge of scholarship on the changing role of intellectuals in the increasingly interconnected societies of the twenty-first century. What is happening to gender studies and gender research as emerging but contested fields of scientific knowledge in the conditions of the new academic governance? And which role do gender studies and gender research play in the current transformations in academia? Positing the notions of coloniality of ignorance and geopolitics of ignorance as central to coloniality and colonisation, this book examines how colonialists socially produced ignorance among colonised indigenous peoples so as to render them docile and manageable. Dismissing colonial descriptions of indigenous people as savages, illiterate, irrational, prelogical, mystical, primitive, barbaric and backward, the book argues that imperialists/colonialists contrived geopolitics of ignorance wherein indigenous regions were forced to become ignorant, hence containable and manageable in the imperial world. Questioning the provenance of modernist epistemologies, the book asks why Eurocentric scholars only contest the provenance of indigenous knowledges, artefacts and scientific collections. Interrogating why empire sponsors the decolonisation of universities/epistemologies in indigenous territories while resisting the repatriation/restitution of indigenous artefacts, the book also wonders why Westerners who still retain indigenous artefacts, skulls and skeletons in their museums, universities and private collections do not consider such artefacts and skulls to be colonising them as well. The book is valuable to scholars and activists in the fields of anthropology, museums and heritage studies, science and technology studies, decoloniality, policymaking, education, politics, sociology and development studies.
With 342 years of colonialism and apartheid in South Africa, a book of this calibre is essential to contribute to scholarly debates on the decolonisation of the media. After the democratic dispensation in 1994, there was a narrow pursuit of transformation and media freedom while neglecting decolonisation, patriarchal tendencies and the plight of black women journalists who are often vilified while discharging their duties. It was two decades after democracy that the #RhodesMustFall movement which later evolved into #FeesMustFall movement reignited debates on decoloniality in the academia. Moreover, the book is published during the second wave of #FeesMustFall student protests and the demand for decolonised free education is inevitable as no permanent solution to student funding crisis was crafted. In the same vein, the book advocates for decolonised pedagogy in universities, including journalism curriculum. That ownership of the media is still skewed towards white and with only few black companies gradually joining the industry also brings into doubt media freedom, editorial independence, ethics and integrity among media practitioners. Therefore, the decoloniality movement seeks to confront these structural challenges head-on via dialogue to ensure the integrity of the journalism profession. Decolonising journalism in South Africa is published at a time in which journalism serves a watchdog and a critique of a democratic government and needs to follow a bottom-up social justice approach and become a voice to the voiceless. Therefore, this book seeks to revolutionise the media in a way that even the language of reporting of certain issues needs to be changed to a balanced kind of reporting characterised by principles of no fear or favour.
