Excerpt from The Problem of War and Its Solution The intention behind these pages is to demolish this fatalistic doctrine and to substitute a reasonable theory more in accordance with the facts. As might be expected, once the real factors of the problem are known the solution is at hand for those who are not dismayed by the bogies of tradition. Excerpt from The Great Cycle: The Solution of the Problem of War, an Abridgement of the Manuscript in Five Volumes, Bearing the Title of the World Question and Its Answer Of all war aims none is so important as that there should henceforth on earth be no more war. Excerpt from The Problems of the War-and the Peace: A Handbook for Students The in uence exercised over the minds of Germans by fear of Russia is a factor which English students of the problem generally leave out of account. It cannot be left out of account if we are to get at the bottom of the material external facts of this war, and understand the motives that entered into it. Excerpt from The War: Its Causes and Consequences The age is revolutionary. The present is an epoch in the world's history of transition - a sort of moral exodus of the nations - which has lasted now some three centuries; and no stability in governments anywhere, much less here, can be looked for until the passage from the old regime to the new has been completed. To a close observer, the social ebullition in this coun try has long been of a threatening character. From the birth of our government, its elements have been in an uneasy state; and the bosom of society has more than once been agitated by the throes of coming convulsions. The time has arrived for these inevitable disturbances, so long concealed, to manifest their dangerous activity. An open rupture is at last reached; and however it may be allayed temporarily, will be again and again renewed until the foundations of society are broken up, or the principles which now lie at its base are extruded, or so modified by the introduction of others that their excesses will be entirely counteracted. Excerpt from The Causes of War, Including an Outline and Study of the World War and Official Peace Negotiations There was also recognized the need, well nigh universal up to the very present, of a brief suggestive course in book form, for the study of the Great War, - its background, progress and issues, and the peace outlook, which would be suitable for the busy student and the busy citizen, who are simply bewildered in the great mass of unorganized material that confronts them, - and that this should be adapted to the schoolroom as well as the home. Hence the second and third parts of this work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Vital Issues of the War The first seven sermons in this volume were preached on successive Sundays in April and May and the eighth in September of the present year. Now that the church seems, in the eyes of many, to have fallen from the high esteem in which it was held by a former generation, no doubt a volume of sermons, even on "The Vital Issues of the War," runs grave risk of not being read. Since the war began, however, sharp criticism has been visited upon the pulpit for evading the discussion of its compelling moral and spiritual problems; it needs, therefore, to be made known that all pulpits, to say the least, have not deserved the reproach of failing to utilize this unique opportunity. So my book goes forth, quite without apology, for what it is - the messages of a preacher to his people in the regular course of his ministry, printed as they were delivered, with only the slight revision desirable for publication. Such utterances inevitably reflect a point of view determined in part by the time at which they were spoken. In this they are in nowise exceptional. Magazine articles, or the chapters of a book, must be finished sometime, and must bear internal evidences of their date of composition. Later impressions, especially of the swiftly-moving panorama of a world-war, would modify certain details. Thus, one could not speak now with as much optimism of the Bolshevik rule in Russia as was possible when Sermon IV was preached last April. Still, I have decided to let the sermon stand, as perhaps an over-sympathetic interpretation of the obscure strivings of the Russian democracy, the final outcome of which is still far from apparent. In such a case, one would rather err by undue generosity than by cold-blooded cynicism, which the sermon was intended to rebuke. Excerpt from The Problems and Lessons of the War T was not without some natural hesitation that the authorities of the university approved the bold and brilliant plan of my colleague, Professor Blakeslee, to hold a conference here, at Clark University, upon a topic that has aroused throughout the world an intensity Of feeling and a diversity of Opinion which is Without precedent in history. It Should be Clearly understood at the outset that the university has Simply offered a free platform, and invited the frankest expression Of opinion, but has assumed responsibility for no man's views. All Of the Speakers on the program whose ad dresses follow in this volume, were here as our guests; they came not Without effortand even expense, on their part, to contribute to the symposium, and entered heartily into its spirit; each is a widely recognized au thority on the topic on which he speaks.
