Wild Grapes and Rattlesnakes chronicles the extraordinary life and times of George Cullinen, Spanish Civil War veteran, union organizer and anti-war activist. Unlike other Spanish Civil War veterans such as George Orwell and Arthur Koestler, Cullinen's devotion to the cause of the Spanish Republic never wavered, even when the trauma of shell shock finally drove him from the battlefield. In this evocative memoir, Cullinen recounts the events in his life before, during and after the war, offering wry insights into the forces that shaped the history of the last century, with Spain as a cruel microcosm for the global struggle against Fascism that was yet to come. Cullinen recalls his youthful follies growing up in the Pacific Northwest as a rough and tumble prelude to his political radicalization in the years following World War I. While still in his teens, he became a merchant seaman and at one point, hoping to create a new life for himself, he jumped ship in Japan, only to be apprehended and deported. Other early adventures include his riding the rails during the Depression, working for the Civilian Conservation Corps, and fighting for the rights of fellow seaman on the waterfront. In later years, as an educator and filmmaker, he devoted his life to the cause of world peace. While fierce in his beliefs and driven by an inflamed social conscience, Cullinen tells his tale with compassion, humility, and self-effacing humor.
Spain's Civil War, a tune-up for WW II, began in 1936. In three years, 600,000 patriots lay dead. Americans played a role in the conflict and Gerassi has chronicled their experiences. . . . Gerassi interviewed Americans who survived the Spanish Civil War, creating an oral history from those interviews. But the author has done more than that; he has written a social history of the 1930s, providing a window into an era in which radicalism took many forms. His people's history' of men in arms and why they chose to take them up is most enlightening. "Choice"
** Shortlisted for the Military History Matters Book of the Year Award ** 'Magnificent. Narrative history at its vivid and compelling best' Fergal Keane The first major history of the International Brigades: a tale of blood, ideals and tragedy in the fight against fascism. The Spanish Civil War was the first armed battle in the fight against fascism, and a rallying cry for a generation. Over 35,000 volunteers from sixty-one countries around the world came to defend democracy against the troops of Franco, Hitler and Mussolini. Ill-equipped and disorderly, yet fuelled by a shared sense of purpose and potential glory, these disparate groups of idealistic young men and women formed a volunteer army of a size and type unseen since the Crusades, known as the International Brigades. Were they heroes or fools? Saints or bloodthirsty adventurers? And what exactly did they achieve? In this magisterial history, Giles Tremlett tells – for the first time – the story of the Spanish Civil War through the experiences of this remarkable group. Drawing on the Brigades' archives in Moscow, as well as first-hand accounts, The International Brigades captures all the human drama of a historic mission to halt fascist expansion in Europe.
A graphic history featuring the true story of three friends from Brooklyn who join in the global fight against fascism In this exhilarating graphic novel about the Spanish Civil War, three American friends set off from Brooklyn to join in the fight—determined to make Spain “the tomb of fascism” for the sake of us all. Together they defy the U.S. government and join the legendary Abraham Lincoln Brigade, throw themselves into battle, and conduct sabotage missions behind enemy lines. As Spain is shattered by the savagery of combat during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), readers see the darkening clouds of the World War to come. Artist Anne Timmons has created a thrilling graphic novel in the spirit of the “war comic” genre that appeared after the attack on Pearl Harbor and the United States' entry into World War II. Drawing upon the real-life experiences of Lincoln Brigade veteran Abe Osheroff, writer Miguel Ferguson offers a lively, accessible resource based on actual events during the Great Depression and the Spanish Civil War. ¡Brigadistas! will stir the memories of older audiences who remember the Spanish Civil War as a time of unparalleled international solidarity and heartbreak, and it will expose young audiences to the passions, politics, and conflicts of a bygone era with striking contemporary relevance.
THE LINCOLN BRIGADE The day after Christmas in 1936, a group of ninety-six Americans sailed from New York to help Spain defend its democratic government against fascism. Ultimately, twenty-eight hundred United States volunteers reached Spain to become the Abraham Lincoln Brigade. Few Lincolns had any military training. More than half were seriously wounded or died in battle. Most Lincolns were activists and idealists who had worked with and demonstrated for the homeless and unemployed during the Great Depression. They were poets and blue-collar workers, professors and students, seamen and journalists, lawyers and painters, Christians and Jews, blacks and whites. The Brigade was the first fully integrated United States army, and Oliver Law, an African American from Texas, was an early Lincoln commander. William Loren Katz and the late Marc Crawford twice traveled with the Brigade to Spain in the 1980s, interviewed surviving Lincolns on old battlefields, and obtained never-before-published documents and photographs for this book.
