This richly illustrated book provides a valuable guide to the role of pictures and other visual materials in language teaching. It brings together a wealth of ideas on how to use pictures in a wide range of language learning situations. The first section discusses the contribution visuals can make to all the classroom settings in providing real opportunities for students to communicate, whether they are working as a class, in groups or in pairs. Sections B and C contain over 200 practical suggestions for picture-generated language work. These make use of visual materials which are readily available to teachers anywhere or illustrations which have been kept simple so that they can be copied easily. The activities can be integrated into all stages of the language teaching process and advice is given on how to adapt the ideas to suit different teaching environments. The final section describes the process of setting up a picture library and offers guidance on where to begin looking for visuals, how to categorise pictures and different methods of storage.
In 1976 Dutch textile specialist Rens Heringa first visited Kerek in rural East Java and discovered a region where--unlike the rest of Java--the full range of textiles with woven patterning, as well as the only batik still made on handwoven cotton cloth, continued to be produced for local use. Each type of cloth made in Kerek is created for a specific purpose--to be worn by a person of a particular age, social, or residential group; to serve in life-cycle events such as marriage or funerals; to act as a focal point in agricultural ceremonies or curing rites. The functions, techniques, patterning, and especially the color combinations of the cloth all form part of a highly structured and elaborate system of belief that is remarkably integrated with the community's social organization, mythology, and ritual practices. Remnants of similarly integrated systems of belief are known from many parts of Java, but by the late 20th century the full system could be observed only in Kerek. Batik from Kerek today represents the antecedents of the courtly and urban batik found in collections around the world.
The 1st International Conference on Language and Language Teaching (ICLLT 2019) is a bi-annual international conference hosted by the Faculty of Education and Teacher Training Universitas Tidar. The 1st ICLLT 2019 brings a central issue on "New Directions of Language and Language Teaching in Facing Industrial Revolution Era 4.0". The conference serves researchers, academics, and practitioners to present the research findings, share thoughts, and experiences to improve the quality of language teaching in Indonesia. The conference invited four keynotes speakers: Hywel Coleman (University of Leeds, United Kingdom), Dr. Maizatulliza Muhammad (Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris, Malaysia), Dr. Robbie Lee Sabnani (National Institute of Education, Nanyang Technological University, Singapore), and Dr. Dwi Winarsih (Universitas Tidar, Indonesia). This year's conference invited presenters with 56 articles were selected to be published. It was also a great pleasure to work with the presenters for presenting excellent papers, the committee for the hard work in organizing the conference, and all parties who have been contributing to the conference and the publication of the proceedings. We also expect that the future ICLLT will be a successful event, as indicated by the increasing contributions presented in this volume.
