"This project uses stakeholder evidence from semi-structured interviews to analyze the relative effectiveness of an oil company's stated 'corporate social responsibility' (CSR) initiatives in a new, Arctic host community. Specifically, this project analyzes the outcomes of StatoilHydro initiatives to date in Hammerfest, Norway, where the Snøhvit (Snow White) natural gas project began production in 2007. It gauges the ability of 'socially responsible' approaches to development to internalize negative externalities and promote positive 'spin-offs.' Arctic countries are increasingly prioritizing petroleum development. The convergence of dramatic climate change, increasing energy demands, and high energy prices has made the Arctic an alluring frontier for the oil industry and Arctic governments. Small Arctic communities are increasingly playing host to large energy projects with the potential for dramatic cultural, social, environmental, and economic upheaval, but also economic growth and increased human capital. In this case study, CSR initiatives resulted in a broader accounting of social costs and benefits, an outcome that better internalized externalities, and pareto-improving trades between stakeholders and industry"--Leaf iii.
This work describes the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in a developing economy such as that of Nigeria. Specifically, it is a case study of the role of industry; in this case Ashaka Cement Company plc; in promoting sustainable development in its host communities through CSR. The company was established in 1979; but general outcry by the communities around the company on its activities necessitates this work. They are 'crying' against neglect in terms of employment and the provisions of basic infrastructures, such as water, road, education and electricity. Against the foregoing, this book addressed the following questions; what are the strategies being used by the company to achieve its set objectives? What are the patterns of relationship between the company and the host communities? What are the inputs of the company on the area and people who formed the communities? The Stakeholder theory of the firm is used as a theoretical framework. By means of tabulation and percentage tools of analyses on data collected through questionnaires and interview, a significant positive relationship between grievances by the Ashaka communities and the activities of the company was found.

Freedom of poverty is a universal human prerogative and right. Hence the tackling of poverty in developing countries is a social obligation for governments, MNCs and MNOs at a national, intergovernmental and supra-national level especially with its institutionalisation within the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). Tourism was a sector that was actively promoted by the above mentioned institutions in order to act as a catalyst for development and poverty reduction. Nevertheless in the course of times tourism did not deliver the expected result: poverty reduction. Hence this book embarks on exploring, by adopting a participatory approach to research, the extent to which the various 'controlling interests', external (development agencies) and internal (government institutions), dictate and influence tourism development in the ex-colonial geographical areas under investigation and their relationships with various community constituents - mainly those in the local communities at the grassroots level.
