In 1996, Dr. Nancy Olivieri identified an unexpected risk associated with a drug she was testing to treat a rare blood disorder. When she moved to inform patients of this risk as required by medical ethics, the drug manufacturer, Apotex, terminated the research trial and threatened to take legal action. This was the opening salvo in a long contest involving Olivieri, Apotex, Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children, and the University of Toronto. Olivieri expected to receive support on the ethical issue from the hospital and the university, but neither institution provided effective support against ongoing legal harassment by Apotex. Intense media coverage followed the case from beginning to end. The Olivieri Report is the report of an independent inquiry--commissioned by the Canadian Association of University Teachers--into the case, conducted by three widely respected Canadian academics.

Selling Out demonstrates that the logics of value of the market and of universities are not only different but opposed to one another. Toronto's Hospital for Sick Children is the most famous medical institution in Canada. But when educators look for resources to illustrate to students the more typical examples of bad – let alone scandalous – practices of some firms, the cupboard is almost entirely bare. And yet there is a critical need for business educators to expose students and managers to such issues to understand the different multifaceted phenomena of our late capitalist era; to support critical, reflective moral development; and to reflect and understand the complexities of organizational life. To argue that such cases deal with the bad apples in an otherwise functioning system misses the point. Stereotypes are dangerous, especially when they are used by demagogues. Slogans, which remind the historian of darker times in human history, however, reappear again in a growing number. As companions of the rise of right wing forces in Europe they make up ground in more and more regions and gain momentum in the political debate. It consequently seems to be more than important to focus on and closer analyze the interrelationship between stereo types and violence in modern societies. The fourth volume of Global Humanities tries to achieve such a broader analysis and provides reading in the fields of history, political science, gender and media studies. The authors show and emphasize in which ways the two above named factors are interacting with each other and influencing the popular opinion in modern nation states. Topics that are covered include Anti-Italian riots in Zurich at the end of the 19th century, a discussion of the interrelationship of racism and violence in Germany since the 1980s, and an analysis of gender based violence in Serbia. During 2008-2009, Israel lobby organizations made concerted efforts to block a planned conference on statehood for Israel and Palestine at Toronto's York University. This book is a report of an independent investigation by author Jon Thompson for the Canadian Association of University Teachers, an organization that has been active in the defence of free speech and academic freedoms which have been challenged on Canadian campuses. Controversy began at York soon after the Israel-Palestine conference was advertised, and intensified over the following months. The event was repeatedly denounced, and university administrators were deluged by irate e-mails and phone calls. York, as the host university, was warned of boycotts and the cessation of donations and was denounced in fullpage newspaper ads. When York and its co-sponsors stood their ground, the Israel lobby persuaded the Harper government to contact SSHRC, an academic funding agency also involved with the event. In response, SSHRC made an unprecedented intervention. The Canadian Association of University Teachers then made a public issue of the government's interference and, in the end, the conference was held as planned. This book establishes the facts of the case, provides a context for understanding it, and explores the meaning of academic freedom in Canada. Author Jon Thompson proposes measures which universities and university faculty members can take to better safeguard their ability to discuss and debate ideas which some may wish to silence.

In this unique study, emerging higher education leader and policy expert Kenneth D. Gariepy takes a Foucauldian genealogical approach to the study of the intellectually “free” subject through the analysis of selected academic freedom statement-events. Assuming academic freedom to be an institutionalized discourse-practice operating in the field of contemporary postsecondary education in Canada, a specific kind of cross-disciplinary, historico-theoretical research is conducted that pays particular attention to the productive nature and effects of power-knowledge. The intent is to disrupt academic freedom as commonsensical “good” and universal “right” in order to instead focus on how it is that the academic subject emerges as free/unfree to think – and therefore free/unfree to be – through particular, effective, and effecting regimes of truth and strategies of objectification and subjectification. In this way, the author suggests how it is that academic freedom operates as a set of systemically agonistic practices that might only realize a different economy of discourse through the contingent nature of the very social power that produces it. Dr. Gariepy’s use of Foucault’s genealogical analysis provides a wholly different way in which to re-think the construction and practice of academic freedom in Canada and is thus an important contribution to the broader discursive field it seeks to analyze. Given contemporary neoliberal critiques of the university, the issue of academic freedom and the intellectually free subject is a vital problem that is of interest to numerous knowledge producing communities – on and off campus. Equally important in addressing the problem of academic freedom is how the book also contributes a new description of the genealogical method – something Foucault did not stipulate – that is original, ambitious, compelling, and insightful.
