Excerpt from The Manual of American Water-Works, 1891: Compiled From Special Returns; Containing History, Distribution, Consumption, Revenue and Expenses, Cost, Debt and Sinking Fund, Etc., Etc., Of the Water-Works of the United States and Canada; With Summaries for Each State and Group of States This volume contains descriptions of all water-works known to be in operation or under construction July 1, 1891. In addition brief descriptions are given of such projects as bid fair to develop into works. As the descriptive matter relating to old works has been printed in one or both of the previous editions of the manual the greater part of it is omitted from this volume, which, so far as the main descriptive matter goes, should be used in connection with the issue for 1889-90. All changes and improve ments to existing water-works made since the last issue, and all new works, are included in the present volume, the descriptions of new works being as complete as the information at hand would allow. The figures under Distribution and Financial have been corrected to include the fiscal year 1890. All other information has been corrected and supplemented to as late a date as the compilation and press-work would permit, extending; in general, from July to November, 1891. The fiscal year 1890 includes all years closing between July 1, 1890, and June 30, 1891. The date upon which the several fiscal years close is stated whenever known, and figures are always for the fiscal year 1890 unless otherwise indicated. When so late figures could not be obtained the nearest available ones were generally substituted and their date stated. In place of the matter mentioned above as omitted much statistical matter for previous years is given, thus presenting a means of comparing the yearly growth of the more important works. These figures are taken from a large and recently made collection of annual reports and from previ ous issues of the manual and from the Statistical Tables of American water-works, which was published by engineering news for several years prior to the first issue of the manual, and of which the latter work is an outgrowth. The reduction in the size of the present volume is largely owing to more compact typography. Hearty thanks are extended to all who have furnished information for this and previous issues.
