Tom Longboat was a hero. A member of the Onondaga Nation, he was born on the Six Nations reserve in Oshwegen, near Brantford, Ontario. Despite poverty, poor training, and prejudice, Longboat went on to become one of the world’s best runners. In 1907, at the height of his fame, he won the Boston Marathon and ran in the 1908 Olympic Marathon. Longboat was one of the best-known people of his day, and certainly the most prominent member of the Six Nations. Throughout his career he had to race against opponents, as well as rumors of illegal running activities. Nevertheless, he maintained his dignity, and his achievements still inspire people who understand the great pleasure of running, and running fast.
Autobiography of Usain Bolt Covers his journey from playing cricket and soccer as a kid to becoming the fastest man alive Well-illustrated Years before he set world records for the 100-meter and 200-meter sprints, which made him the fastest man alive and famous, Usain Bolt was a fairly scrawny kid from Trelawny in Jamaica. In this autobiography, Bolt himself shares how, as he grew up and played cricket and soccer, he— and others—learned he could run fast. Very, very fast. Usain Bolt’s journey from a kid with humble beginnings to an Olympic gold medal winner is an inspiring and encouraging story. This beautifully illustrated autobiography shares that story from Bolt’s perspective. It is a celebration of someone who was inspired by other athletes around the world, someone who worked for years to become the best at his sport. Bolt shares stories of the sacrifices he made, the influence of Cristiano Ronaldo, the power of soccer and dancehall music, and his signature lightning bolt move.

A smart, funny memoir exploring the evolution of a man and his relationship with his daughters as they grow up in the grips of the equestrian life. When Chad Oldfather found himself the parent of a toddler who, out of nowhere, became obsessed with horses, he had no idea what awaited. With his younger daughters similarly afflicted, Oldfather was soon enmeshed in the consuming subculture of barns, riding, and horse shows, learning not just about the animals that so inexplicably drew his girls, but also about the people and personalities that populated the spaces around them. A book for parents, whatever their children's interests, and for equestrians, who know what it's like “on the inside” (but maybe not what it's like on the outside, looking in), A Man Walks into a Barn is a wise, witty, and, at times, critical look at both the light and dark sides of youth sports, and equestrianism in particular. Readers find themselves rooting for Oldfather as he struggles to be the best dad he can, supporting a child's dreams in the face of long odds and extraordinary expenses. He writes about his parenting choices and the strange world he finds himself in with humor and honesty, critically examining riding's high cost and the inaccessibility and inequality that results. Aware of the flaws and dangers of youth athletics, as well as the benefits, he strives to protect his girls while supporting their ambitions the best ways he knows how. Filled with the joys, heartbreaks, and life lessons that come from training, competition, and time in the company of horses, this is mostly a book about family, and the strong bonds that can form when parent and child join hands and pursue a passion together.
Within the pages of 'The Spirit of the Vikings' lies a comprehensive compilation of Norse literary works, providing a profound insight into the formidable and enigmatic world of Viking culture. This anthology brings together an array of epic narratives, including the sagas of kings and heroes, tales of voyages, familial conflicts, migrations, and the feats that define the ancient Nordic tapestry. Interwoven into these narratives are the Elder and Younger Eddas, presenting an invaluable perspective on the Norse mythological canon and elevating the reader's understanding of texts that are integral to the historical and literary context of the Viking Age. The inclusion of Norse ballads and mythology further illuminates the cultural ethos and spiritual beliefs that powered the Vikings' lives and afterlives, capturing the raw essence of a people steadfast in their convictions and honor. In an enigmatic decision befitting the lore it contains, the author of 'The Spirit of the Vikings' has chosen anonymity, yet the work speaks volumes of a keen editor with a profound understanding of Norse antiquity. The amalgamation of the sagas and Eddas suggests a dedication to preserving collective memory and a deep respect for the storytelling tradition that has kept these tales alive through the ages. The author may have deliberately faded into obscurity to highlight the collective voice of the Norse people, ensuring that the focus remains squarely on the content rather than the compiler, an act that mirrors the Norse veneration for their shared heritage and lore over individual celebrity. 'The Spirit of the Vikings' is an indispensable literary odyssey for enthusiasts of epic literature, historians of medieval Scandinavia, or anyone fascinated by the fabled Viking era. It is not merely an anthology but a bridge across time, connecting modern-day readers with the ancient sagas and myths that shaped a civilization steeped in bravery, exploration, and spiritual depth. This tome is a treasure for those seeking to imbue their intellect with the profound narratives that are as much a part of the Northern landscape as the fjords and the midnight sun. Join the odyssey, embrace the ethos, and allow the spirit of the Vikings to resonate through the corridors of time.

A new edition of a sports icon's memoir, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Kathrine Switzer's historic running of the Boston Marathon as the first woman to run. In 1967, Kathrine Switzer was the first woman to officially run what was then the all-male Boston Marathon, infuriating one of the event's directors who attempted to violently eject her. In one of the most iconic sports moments, Switzer escaped and finished the race. She made history-and is poised to do it again on the fiftieth anniversary of that initial race, when she will run the 2017 Boston Marathon at age 70. Now a spokesperson for Reebok, Switzer is also the founder of 261 Fearless, a foundation dedicated to creating opportunities for women on all fronts, as this groundbreaking sports hero has done throughout her life. "Kathrine Switzer is the Susan B. Anthony of women's marathoning."-Joan Benoit Samuelson, first Olympic gold medalist in the women's marathon
“A wonderfully evocative biography of the . . . 13th century Icelandic writer and chieftain” who wrote the immortal stories of Thor, Odin, Valhalla, and Ragnarök (Guardian, UK). Much like Greek and Roman mythology, Norse myths are still with us. Famous storytellers from JRR Tolkien to Neil Gaiman have drawn their inspiration from the long-haired, mead-drinking, marauding and pillaging Vikings. But few of us know much about the creator of these immortal heroes: a thirteenth-century Icelandic chieftain by the name of Snorri Sturluson. Like Homer, Snorri was a bard, writing down and embellishing the folklore and pagan legends of medieval Scandinavia. Unlike Homer, Snorri was a man of the world—a wily political power player, one of the richest men in Iceland who came close to ruling it, and even closer to betraying it. In Song of the Vikings, award-winning author Nancy Marie Brown brings Snorri Sturluson’s story to life in a richly textured narrative that draws on newly available sources.
