Inside the World's Major East Asian Collections examines the rise of the "LAM,” an acronym that stands for libraries, archives and museums. In doing so, this book profiles leading experts-librarians, archivists and museum curators-who specialise in East Asian collections from across the world. In examining the dynamically shifting role of the cultural institution in the context of managing information and collections, this book provides important themes offered by these cultural experts in understanding the necessary professional skills, knowledge and personalities that are required for working in such environments of varying size, scope and composition in LAMs. As galleries, LAMs manage preservation and access of history and culture, and their missions and goals as cultural institutions continue to converge. As collecting institutions, LAMs share the common mandate to preserve and make accessible primary resources valuable for researchers and professionals, as well as the public. LAMs are mostly publicly funded, publicly accountable institutions collecting cultural heritage materials. The 133-page study examines how museums and library special collections are using major internet sites such as Pinterest, Facebook, YouTube, Vimeo, Google, Amazon, Bing, Wikipedia, LinkedIn, Flickr, Instagram, Twitter and other major sites. The study looks at how these institutions are using these sites for marketing, research, administration and other areas. The study looks particularly closely at how organizations use the many free services of Google including Google Drive, Google Translate, Google Docs, Google Scholar, Google Books and many others. In addition, it focuses strongly on the growing use of images and video, especially on sites such as YouTube and Vimeo, and the production costs that may be associated with the effective use of video on these and other sites.
A vivid, groundbreaking history of the legacies of slavery in an elite Northern town as told by its Black residents I Hear My People Singing shines a light on a small but historic Black neighborhood at the heart of one of the most elite and world-renowned Ivy-League towns—Princeton, New Jersey. The vivid first-person accounts of more than fifty Black residents detail aspects of their lives throughout the twentieth century. Their stories show that the roots of Princeton’s African American community are as deeply intertwined with the town and university as they are with the history of the United States, the legacies of slavery, and the nation’s current conversations on race. Drawn from an oral history collaboration with residents of the Witherspoon-Jackson neighborhood, Princeton undergraduates, and their professor, Kathryn Watterson, neighbors speak candidly about Jim Crow segregation, the consequences of school integration, World Wars I and II, and the struggles for equal opportunities and civil rights. Despite three centuries of legal and economic obstacles, African American residents have created a flourishing, ethical, and humane neighborhood in which to raise their children, care for the sick and elderly, worship, stand their ground, and celebrate life.
