Figure seventy or eighty sail of ships: many of them heavy, lumbering, round-bowed old merchantmen, so shaped in beam and length that they might have been built by the league and sawed off as customers required them. A dozen ships at a time would be lagging; the naval officer in command would signal them--but to no purpose: the sour old merchant skipper, wrapped up in pilotcloth, eyed the epaulet askant, and sulkily went to work to give as much trouble as possible.
