Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 88: August 12, 1926 Have we obeyed the Gospel Of the Lord Jesus Christ; have we had faith in Him; have we believed in Him; and have we been repentant and turned away from our wrongdoing? Have we hearkened to the testimony and advice and counsel of the servants of God? Have we gone into the waters of baptism and received the remission of our sins Have hands been laid upon us for the reception Of the Holy Ghost? If we can answer these questions in the affirmative, every one of us can rise and say, I know that this is the work of God, because I have received the gift of the Holy Ghost, through which, and through which alone, any man can know of the things of God. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 88: August 19, 1926 I said in our Mutual Improvement General Board meeting the other night, when there was a little discussion regarding testi mony, that I heard one of our bright, well-educated, young missionaries say that he had attended one of our Church schools for 'four years until he graduated from that school, and then attended the Brigham Young University for four years until he graduated from that institution of learning, and he made this wonderful statement: I have come to understand my relation ship toward my Father in heaven, the nature and importance of the Priesthood of Almighty God that has been conferred upon me, and the duty I owe to my fellowmen, better in the three months that I have been labouring here as a missionary than during all those years when I was attending school and taking regular theological lessons. Then he added: And I had good teachers, too. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 88: August 26, 1926 Polygamy, remember, was part, though by no means the essential part, of the Mormon religion. And accordingly, when the United States Government passed a law abolishing it and providing that only the first wife of a Mormon should be recognised by law, the Mormons challenged that law in the Supreme Court, and, having lost their case, went to prison rather than renounce their celestial sisters or make illegitimate those children who, according to their Church, were as legitimate as yours or mine. Until, in the end, after six years of struggle, during which the Mormon Church was actually deprived of its lands and properties, anglo-saxondom reached its usual com promise. The plural wives and children of the past were declared legitimate, provided that polygamy for the future Should be barred. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 88: February 25, 1926 That a transformation is worked in the being Of a man into whose heart comes the testimony of Christ is beyond all question. Examples are so numerous that they would, of course, not bear extensive repeating at this time. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 88: April 22, 1926 Mormonism makes no claim to originality, so far as its doc trines are concerned. Framed in the heavens, it was revealed first to Adam; after him to Enoch, to Noah, to Abraham, and to Moses, in a series of dispensations reaching down to the days of Christ, and on into these latter days, when it has come again, this time to prepare the way before the second appearing of the Lord and the winding up of His work as pertaining to this planet. Such is its ancient past and present purpose, as set forth in the sacred books of the Church. These books, in addition to the Bible, are the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price, the latter two containing the revelations of Jesus Christ to His servant Joseph Smith. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 88: February 18, 1926 The Church, thoroughly reprobate, created offices at pleasure and laid claim to secular authority, notwithstanding our Lord's avowal to Pilate, My kingdom is not of this world. While still boasting its divine origin as founded by Jesus Christ, who refused earthly kingship, the Church lifted itself above all kings and rulers, and arrogated to itself supremacy in the affairs of nations. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 88: May 27, 1926 That any group Of persons may associate themselves together as a worshiping assembly and call themselves a church is con ceded, and they are at liberty to choose any name they may desire by which their organisation shall be known. For all the good which such an organisation may accomplish the Lord will give them credit, and they will be rewarded for their efforts to establish faith in 'the hearts of the people, I believe, far beyond their expectations, for everything that is good and persuadeth men to do good cometh from God. The Latter-day Saints wish all people who are thus striving God-speed. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 88: June 10, 1926 Such men as I have mentioned, therefore, who are devoting their entire time to the Church, receive an allowance, though a very meagre one in comparison to what is usually allowed men of that kind in other walks of life. There are men on this stand, and throughout the Church, who, by devoting their entire time to their own affairs, could double or treble or quadruple the small allowance that is given them by the Church for their support. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 88: June 3, 1926 Nor did they believe Paul when he declared to King Agrippa and Festus, that as he journeyed to Damascus at noon day a light brighter than the sun descended from heaven, which caused him and those who were with him to fall to the earth. A voice called to him declaring that it was Jesus of Nazareth who spoke, telling him to arise, and stand upon his feet, and said: I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness to the people, especially to the Gentiles, to open their eyes, and to turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan unto God. The Redeemer had been crucified, declared dead, and Festus could not understand how He could appear to anyone; he cried out: Paul, thou art beside thyself; much learning doth make thee mad. But Paul answered, I am not mad, most noble Festus; but speak forth the words of truth and soberness. So do we in soberness and truth bear witness to the people of the world to-day, to king and subject, to patrician and plebian, to rich and poor, to Christian and heathen, that Joseph Smith was divinely called to be the instrument in the hands of the Lord in the restoration of the Gospel of Christ; that the keys of the Priesthood were conferred upon him as has been stated, and have come down through his successors to the present. Another thing to which we bear witness is, that all men may know the truth of the testimony which we bear by asking the Lord for it in faith. It is not by words of men that you have been con verted, my brethren and sisters, but by the gift of the Holy Ghost, which has borne witness of the truth of these things; and this great congregation of people would arise and testify to the truth of what I say if requested to do so.
