Elizabeth Avery was born 19 January 1824 in Bolivar, Tennessee. Her parents were Nathan Avery and Rebecca Rivers. She married Minor Meriwether, son of Garrett Meriwether, in 1850 in Memphis, Tennessee. They had three sons. Her husband fought in the Confederate Army in the Civil War. She crusaded for women's suffrage.
