Samuel Smith, Sr., was born in 1778 in New Jersey. When he was still a small child his family moved to Ohio. He married Elizabeth McCleave and they had 13 children.
George Eli Benefiel (1759-1832) moved from York County to Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, married Mary Buchanan in 1787, and moved to Jefferson County, Indiana. Descendants and relatives lived in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Oklahoma, Alabama, Georgia and elsewhere.
Joseph Plains and Camas Prairie are located in Idaho County near what is now Grangeville.
