Folklore pervades childhoods, families and communities and is the language of the illiterate. Even in large, modern cities, folklore-proverbs, lullabies, folk medicine, folktales-is only a suburb away, a cousin or a grandmother away. Wherever people live, folklore grows. India is a country of many languages, religions, sects and cultures. It is a land of many myths and countless stories. Translated from twenty-two Indian languages, these one hundred and ten tales cover most of the regions of India and represent favorite's narratives from the subcontinent. A.K. Ramanujan's outstanding selection is an indispensable guide to the richness and vitality of India's ageless oral folklore tradition.
This book of oral tales from the south Indian region of Kannada represents the culmination of a lifetime of research by A. K. Ramanujan, one of the most revered scholars and writers of his time. The result of over three decades' labor, this long-awaited collection makes available for the first time a wealth of folktales from a region that has not yet been adequately represented in world literature. Ramanujan's skill as a translator, his graceful writing style, and his profound love and understanding of the subject enrich the tales that he collected, translated, and interpreted. With a written literature recorded from about 800 A.D., Kannada is rich in mythology, devotional and secular poetry, and more recently novels and plays. Ramanujan, born in Mysore in 1929, had an intimate knowledge of the language. In the 1950s, when working as a college lecturer, he began collecting these tales from everyone he could—servants, aunts, schoolteachers, children, carpenters, tailors. In 1970 he began translating and interpreting the tales, a project that absorbed him for the next three decades. When Ramanujan died in 1993, the translations were complete and he had written notes for about half of the tales. With its unsentimental sympathies, its laughter, and its delightfully vivid sense of detail, the collection stands as a significant and moving monument to Ramanujan's memory as a scholar and writer. I was born in the village of Kangrali B.K., in Belagavi district, within the state of Karnataka in India. I am a certified Mechanical Engineer. It may be of interest to note that I have three books published to my credit. They are as follows: · How Should the Indian Education System Be? · The Modern Administration of the Earth · Secrets from Gopal This is my fourth book. I am sure the readers will show the same enthusiasm in receiving it as they have of my earlier books. I studied in a regional school in rural India and therefore found it very difficult to understand English during my college education. That was when I decided that I should write a book on English. I targeted this book at foreign students who are not native speakers of English or were made to take compulsory college education in English. In this book I have specifically excluded all grammar principles because it’s a never ending game throughout life. I am not saying that you should not read a grammar book; I recommend that you please read your own language grammar book first and then read the English grammar book in its translated form in your mother tongue. Before you commence your English training with this book you should master grammar of your mother tongue and then English grammar. In this book only practical examples are given for your study. I request you to refer a newspaper in your mother tongue with its version of English of the corresponding day. Compare similar news items in both the newspapers. While referring the dictionary, please remember which word comes under which ‘Parts of Speech’ as this is very important to know which word comes at what position in a sentence. This is very essential to learn proper writing and speaking in English. Similarly you can relate with TV News Channels. Initially watch the news on TV Channels in your mother tongue and then watch the same on English Channels. This will definitely help in learning English. Also please view English TV channels with translations of what is spoken in vernacular languages. This book does not contain principles of grammar but helps you to learn English in a practical manner.
"My request to readers is not to pick this book up as a novel, rather take it as a guide for winning and succeeding in life. Its USP is 10 steps, given in chapters full of stories and examples from all walks of life making the topics more practical and understandable. This book is for whom? This is for anyone and everyone looking to ‘win’ in corporate or personal life. However, this book will be very useful for management students trying to make their careers in the corporate world and managers / executives willing to climb the ladder of hierarchy to be effective senior managers. How to read this book? Read it slowly, understand it gradually! The process of change is not sudden. Read it slowly, understand it with the help of stories, pondering on the points for a while, get a taste of it, learning from it, try to solve the riddles, try to answer the questions and proceed further gradually. Practice these concepts You may admire or challenge these concepts but you need to practice these in day to day life. You will find these equally effective in the boardroom as well as the dining room – it will give you a cutting edge in discussions with corporate honchos or your family members. Do not forget... Practice makes a man perfect... a woman too... "
