"We live in amazing times!" Jacob Miller, the patriarch of the Miller clan, pronounces. Indeed, the post-Civil War era is a time of rapid change and inventions. His son Eli is awed by the newly invented farming equipment and machinery. His daughter Rachel is selling typewriters, sewing machines, a new assortment of merchandise in her general store ordered by telegram and shipped by train. Younger son and church elder, Daniel is alarmed about the arrival of new ideas such Unitarianism, Transcendentalism, Marxism, and evolution. The founding of a new church divides the Congregational Church, the town, and the Miller family! Youngest son, Dr. Isaac Miller is busy treating patients night and day.
