Excerpt from The Evolution of Religion The demand for a second edition of this little book within a year is most gratifying, for it would seem to indicate that, in a measure at least, it has fulfilled the purpose for which it was written, namely, to show briefly and in such a way as to appeal to the man of the street that religion is a natural and necessary product of human evolution and not a supernatural revela tion; to show that true religion is ethics, not theology. If these pages help to attain this end the effort was well worth while, for to do this is to have a part in the evolution of the Religion of the Future, Which will mould the people of the future even as religions of the past have moulded the people of the past. While nothing has here been presented that is 'hew to scholars, for the convenience of those who may wish to verify the truths herein set forth or who may wish for further information on these great subjects, the following literature is especially recommended. Excerpt from Evolution in Religion The function of Science is to perceive and to classify phenomena, to connect them in thought as antecedent and consequent, cause and effect, and to arrive at last at those ulti mate forces, factors, and entities whose exist ence and qualities are apprehended, at least so far as they stand related to other objects, even though their absolute essence and origin be unknown. Excerpt from Evolution and Religion I AM afraid I shall lay myself open to the charge of having adopted a very ambitious title for this book but the size alone is sufficient to convince any one that it is not intended to cover the extensive fields of Evolution and Religion. My object is not to teach evolution, far less theology; but, by placing some of the leading facts of each subject side by side, to call attention to their natural connection. Through the labours of Wolff, Lamarck, and especially Darwin, belief in creation has given place to the idea of gradual development in the world of life; as had previously been the case in regard to the inorganic world. Since the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species, the theory of evolution has invaded every department of thought and enquiry, and has revolutionized men's views upon many of the most important subjects. Scientifically, creation is a word now almost without meaning. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Evolution of Religions Uring a long life occupied mostly in the practice of law, I have spent much of my leisure time, and especially since largely quitting practice in the last few years, in the study of the systems of religion of the world and of religious literature, both ancient and modem. The Bible I have studied most thoroughly, and am well versed in the Buddhist Scriptures, the Zend Avesta of Zoroaster, the Analects of Confucius and Mencius, and the Koran, and have read the Book of Mormon, Brahmanic literature, and his tory generally, ancient and modern. Excerpt from The Social Evolution of Religion These chapters were originally read to a small group of persons meeting in a private parlor in Boston, under the auspices of the local branch of The Free Religious Association of Amer ica. Not all which was written was read at any of these meet ings, but often many pages were omitted in order that the lecture might be followed by questions and discussions. The lectures have been carefully corrected, many pages excised, many more pages added, and the whole rewritten and thoroughly revised. My friend, John Haynes Holmes, minister of the Community Church in the city of New York, has read the whole of the manuscript, given me the benefit of his suggestions and cor rections, and written the foreword, which states briefly and pertinently that at which I have aimed in my book. Excerpt from Religion in Evolution Whether there ever was a pre-religious stage in the development of man is' an Open question. Excerpt from Evolution and Religion: Or Faith as a Part of a Complete Cosmic System HE doctrine Of evolution is so recent a T conception, especially in its bearing on spiritual things, that we are able as yet neither to define it well within itself, nor to see its implications when taken in connection with our higher life. We do two most un desirable things: we make the notion so in flexible as to strangle Our intellectual powers, and we struggle with the theory itself as some thing which we would gladly escape. We hope to bring some relief at both Of these points; to show that evolution is not a conception in extinction of reason, nor yet a movement in overthrow Of faith. Our spiritual life is in volved in it and built up by it as its most com prehensive and consummate product. We in no way grasp Our religious beliefs so firmly as when we see that they are woven into the entire web Of events.
