This directory details the output of transcriptions from the Armed Forces Radio Service from the beginning in 1942 up to 1967. Since many official papers of the early days are no longer available, the information was gathered from many private sources. The range of programs the AFRS covered was immense. Particularly during the war years the accent was on entertainment. Popular and classical music and comedy and drama shows were rebroadcast over AFRS stations all over the world. The AFRS also produced many programs designed to inform and educate. This directory attempts to present the complete range of series the AFRS transmitted. Collectors and followers of popular, country or series music and of drama or comedy shows will appreciate the short description of the AFRS shows, complete with cast names and issues and recording dates, that comprise the entries. The entries are organized by series and include the Libraries series, H-Series, Network Series, R-Series, and Assigned Matrix Numbers. An appendix of non-AFRS transcriptions is included along with a bibliography for further research.

Global Radio: From Shortwave to Streaming chronicles the development of radio as a global medium. In this book, Shaheed Nick Mohammed examines the evolution of radio from its early uses as little more than a novelty into a set of powerful systems for international exchanges of news, culture, and political influence. In doing so, the book follows the development of radio as a wireless form of the telegraph, its evolution into a medium for sound transmission across the air, and its adaptation to digital networked audio and transmissions technologies. Mohammed also outlines the myriad changes in the radio industry in numerous contexts around the globe and over time, including the early development of commercial and non-commercial broadcasting in the United States, Europe, India, and China and the evolution of so-called “international broadcasters.” As radio played a part in colonial politics, it also figured prominently in the politics of the post-colonial. Within the broader context of global radio, this book examines several former colonies and the transformation of radio from a tool of empire into an instrument of national development. John Herndon “Johnny” Mercer (1909–76) remained in the forefront of American popular music from the 1930s through the 1960s, writing over a thousand songs, collaborating with all the great popular composers and jazz musicians of his day, working in Hollywood and on Broadway, and as cofounder of Capitol Records, helping to promote the careers of Nat “King” Cole, Margaret Whiting, Peggy Lee, and many other singers. The style developed from the Texas string band tradition, growing from a fiddle and guitar duo into full swing band groups, and along the way, it drew from and absorbed a variety of other musical styles, thus making it one of the most diverse genres in American music.
