I think it may be useful for the information of parties embarking either in a Company or as a private speculation (as the field is wide) to publish in this work an account of the Fishery Bounties of Ireland, extending from the 5th of January 1827, to the 5th of April 1830, for the encouragement and improvement of the Irish Fisheries; their regulations were clear and practicable, but if they can be impr oved upon so much the better; my object is to impress the fact strongly upon the minds of the managers of a speculation, that they are not entering upon an El Dorado lately discovered. As such is not the case, this being a speculation that has often failed in good hands. I attribute those failures to the following causes. First, the inadequate vessels with which the Fisheries were attempted during the stormy winter season, at which time the fish are in the larges t shoals, along the wild shores of the Atlantic. Secondly, when the weather permitted the smaller boats to venture out, although their take of fish might be very great, still their arduous labour was unrequited, as the local demand was in all cases very limited. I think my suggestions greatly overcome these difficulties. And as they have paid the Skerries men who worked upon them on a limited scale, I am perfectly satisfied that on an extended and matured system the returns would be incredible. The returns of the different Fishing Stations will depend on the Besident Director, who should be a person of intelligence, and from his station in life, of influence; for if this situation is filled by any second-rate person he will have no control over either the...
