Hellenistic astrology is a tradition of horoscopic astrology that was practiced in the Mediterranean region from approximately the first century BCE until the seventh century CE. It is the source of many of the modern traditions of astrology that still flourish around the world today, although it is only recently that many of the surviving texts of this tradition have become available again for astrologers to study. Hellenistic Astrology: The Study of Fate and Fortune is one of the first comprehensive surveys of this tradition in modern times. The book covers the history, philosophy, and techniques of ancient astrology, with a special focus on demonstrating how many of the fundamental concepts underlying the practice of western astrology originated during the Hellenistic period.
In Astrological terms, the prenatal epoch starts at the moment of conception. According to the author, "the prenatal epoch is a certain moment of time, occurring approximately at the commencement of the gestative period... when the degree ascending on the eastern horizon, and the longitude of the moon thereat, interchange with the longitude of the moon and the degree ascending at birth, or their respective opposite points." (pg. 19) What this means is that your prenatal moon was your birth ascendant, and your prenatal ascendant is your birth moon, or the opposite points in the zodiac. There are four possibilities: If the natal moon is above or below the horizon at birth, and if it is increasing or decreasing in light. So what good is this? For one thing, it helps explain infant abnormalities, as well as infant mortality, in cases where there are no other astrological factors. It also aids in reading charts for multiple births: Twins, triplets, quads and quints. Closely allied to the Prenatal Epoch is the Law of Polarity, or sex. Properly calculated, the Prenatal Epoch will not only confirm the sex of the individual, it will also serve to rectify the birth-time itself. Unlike other methods of rectification, where absurdly large time changes can result, Prenatal Epoch calculations correct minor errors in clock-time, thus enabling greater precision in forecasting.
Using both a practical and a humanistic approach, Zip Dobyns guides the reader through the proven techniques used to rectify a birth chart. The precise methods she outlines to find the correct birth time are easy to follow, and include the use of various methods of planetary and angle progression, solar arc directions, local house cusps, transits, and more. She also discusses less dependable techniques. About destiny, Zip wrote: "Materialistic science assumes that destiny (experience) creates character. Materialistic astrology assumes that the planets create both character and destiny. Humanistic astrology assumes that our attitudes and actions (including unconscious desires and habit patterns) create our destiny, that we are born when our character-destiny matches the state of the cosmos, and that the planets offer a useful blueprint of the cosmic order, but do not create it. All approaches agree that internal nature and external circumstances match, so that we can understand one more clearly in the light of the other. They differ in where they place the power: in chance and matter (science), in the planets (materialistic astrology), or in the mind (humanistic astrology)."
The horoscope is a map of the heavens at any particular time, usually at the birth of a person. An important aspect to consider when creating charts is the Midheaven. Before computers it was a vital computation in setting up horoscopes. Curiously, many astrologers ignore this point in their interpretations. During over twenty-five years as a professional astrologer, Stephanie Jean Clement, Ph.D., has emphasized that no point of a chart is unimportant. She reveals what she has learned in The Power of the Midheaven. Attention to the Midheaven can revolutionize your understanding of astrology. If you are an astrologer, you need the information in this book to make your readings more complete and to have a full understanding of a chart. The Midheaven indicates what we know about ourselves. The primary form of analysis is to examine the sign the Midheaven is in. For example, people with Leo Midheavens set their goals high and have the staying power to achieve them. They want to rise to the top socially (Jacqueline Kennedy is an example, as is Grace Kelly). They are self-confident, generous, know they are fine leaders, and have organizational capability — but may not be able to admit their own shortcomings. A Leo Midheaven is the master of control and free will, and achieves spiritual enlightenment by knowing that the physical body is necessary. Dr. Clement points out that both Charlie Chaplin and Adolf Hitler have a Leo Midheaven (they were born within days of each other). She gives quotes showing how they used their wills to control people, and both worked hard to eventually reach the top. Obviously, they were quite different people, but the way they achieved their goals was similar. Chaplin actually experienced his first movie-making disappointment with "The Little Dictator," a film about Hitler. This book covers the Midheaven through all the signs. It also includes planets in aspect, transits, and much more. If you are an astrologer, or if you are at all interested in your horoscope, you need this book.
According to professional astrologr Steven Forrest, behind your familiar astrological chart lies another chart entirely, one whose existence you may never have suspected. This chart tells the tale of who you were in a prior lifetime. It speaks of what wounded you then and what work you left undone.
