Excerpt from The Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal, 1913, Vol. 44 In cases not a few, the Christian Churches are invited to take them over with consequences unknown and incapable of being foreseen. Is there funded wisdom enough in the Churches to deal wisely with these temptations, judging discreetly between things which differ - however alike they may appear upon the surface? How is the Church to be prevented from accumulating cos/z reserves, lending them out at high rates of interest to favored borrowers, and then meeting disaster when principal and interest are alike submerged? Once such a catastrophe has occurred how is the Church to recover itself? Indeed, the debtors will generally see to it that no reconstruo tion ever takes place lest there be an accounting. Is this not a real and a pressing danger to Chinese Christianity now? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Chinese Recorder, and Missionary Journal, 1887, Vol. 18 I have had the privilege of having in my possession a little book which he had brought with him from the unknown South, whence he came. This book was given by him to one of his most earnest pupils. There are a few notes written by himself. The book is a volume of thirty-two leaves and called Four Character Classic 2? G. It is a compendium of Christian doctrine, from the Roman Catholic point of view. It runs rapidly through Scripture History, dwelling chiefly on the life of Christ, hastening on to the Judgment Day and the second coming of Christ. It ends with exhortation to believe and receive the peace of salvation. W'hether the book is one issued by the Romanists is not determined. Neither his son nor his disciples could give any account of where the man secured the tract. To this interesting little volume there is appended the following note. E. 1: E fit etc. (the mystic figures on the origin of nature, and the practical duties of filial piety, brought here into such near connection by the pleasure of His Imperial Majesty, present such a contrast that the author of the Canon, would certainly not keep from laughing, if he could see it). Excerpt from The Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal, 1912, Vol. 43 What are the signs of hope in the present crisis in China? On the surface things look anything but hopeful. The Empire is without any government whose authority is universally recognised. The Manchu dynasty has lost its power, and Yuan Shih-k'ai, under the title of Premier, is the ruler of northern China, and directs civil and military affairs at his will. The southern provinces have declared their separate independence and those who have directed the Revolution are pledged to establish a republic, but there is, as yet, 110 single governing body to which all yield allegiance. The two parties are at this moment in conference and are endeavoring to reach a settlement and to restore peace. Meanwhile, in a great part of the country, a state of anarchy prevails. Cities and towns are plundered, brigandage is wide spread, the roads and waterways are unsafe, and property is at the mercy of the strongest. A careless observer would say that China was falling to pieces, that a great catastrophe was destroying the unity of the Empire and that we are fated to see a period of unexampled disorder in which the warring fragments of the nation will reduce everything to ruin before law and order are restored under a stable government. Excerpt from The Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal, 1892, Vol. 23 He proceeds Personally in these cases I prefer Tischendorf but, with critics varying, I cannot help feeling that no one but a special student has a right to an opinion on which he proposes acting. A change from the common text once made in an important passage, it would not be easily, or without friction, that it could be altered back if new evidence seemed to call for a fresh change. After further remarks on the highly subjective character of Westcott and Hort, as compared with Tischendorf, or even Lach mann, adding that until the subjective base is ordinarily accepted by scholars, the outcome is Simply a kind of clever guess-work he concludes with the advice, - to hold to the d104us Receptas, except when there is decided ground for believing it to be wrong, as Shown by the agreement of competent critics of both schools. Excerpt from The Chinese Recorder and Missionary Journal, Vol. 13 This does not mean the first and absolute creation of light. It refers to the introduction of solar and sidereal light upon our earth. The creation of the heavenly bodies and consequently of light, is included in the statement of the first verse that God created the heavens and the earth. But neither sun, nor star-light had as yet reached the earth. Utter darkness brooded over it. It was as black as though neither sun nor star existed. The thick vapours that enveloped it shut out every ray of light and wrapped it in primeval darkness. One who has seen or rather felt a London fog knows how completely a thick vapour can shut out the brightest sunshine. Indeed an ordinary dull day sufficiently shows the obscuring effect of a little vapour. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
