The book consists of two parts: ‘An Introduction to the study of the Gita’ and ‘The Charm and Power of the Gita’. The first consists of lectures delivered by the author and the second is the introductory chapter from the author’s book, Universal Message of the Bhagavad Gita. The Message of the Upanishads is a study, verse by verse, of three of the principal Upanishads, namely, Isha, Kena and Katha, in the light of modern thought and modern needs. Though constituting a small portion of the total Upanishadic literature, they yet contain a lucid exposition of all the essential ideas of this immortal literature. The spiritual insights of the Upanishads are an exception to the tyranny of time. Subsequent scientific advances have not only affected their truth-value but have, on the contrary, only helped to reveal the rational basis of their insights and enhanced their spiritual appeal. The book contains the Sanskrit slokas in Devanagari script, their English transliteration, simple meaning in English followed by explanation in English.

Encouragement, inspiration, positivity — these things are rare today, what to speak of the Goal which they infer. And, though Oneness may be less of a goal and more of a natural abiding condition, it is still the subtlest of all eternal principles, the teachings of which represent the most enigmatic pieces of information one can ever hope to ponder. Therefore, the more that teachings on nonduality can be proliferated, the more chance do struggling beings have of coming in contact with it, purifying their intelligence, and gaining freedom. As the great Advaitan, Ashtavakra, states, “A man of pure intellect realizes the Self swiftly even by instruction casually imparted. A man of impure intellect gets bewildered trying to realize the Self even after inquiring over a lifetime.”

Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba wrote a series of articles under the Vahini series, for Sanathana Sarathi, a monthly magazine being published by Sri Sathya Sai Sadhana Trust, Publications Division, Prasanthi Nilayam.
