Carlton Stowers, the two-time Edgar Award winner and New York Times bestselling master of true crime, is back. Scream at the Sky is his masterful chronicle of one man's murderous career, and another man's sworn promise to deliver justice and closure to the people of Texas. Wichita Falls, Texas, was home to a hundred thousand people in the last months of 1984. That winter was harsh, as the normally arid Texas plains gave way to ominous dark clouds that delivered freezing sleet and rain. But a much darker force was looming, and soon the quiet town was besieged by a faceless evil--and its young women were dying because of it. In the next seventeen months five women were found brutally beaten and murdered, their young lives cut short and their bodies left haphazardly where they fell. In the years that followed, grieving families fruitlessly sought answers. A haunted district attorney chased every lead only to meet one dead end after another. And the killer's identity remained unknown to the ravaged townspeople. Then, fourteen years after the killing started, an investigator who had been assigned the cold case brought to it a renewed dedication, and came upon a chance discovery. Searching through the yellowed case files, he caught a minor detail that suggested one more suspect. Faryion Wardrip was an unhappily married family man who drowned his anger in substance abuse and violent fantasies. But for five unfortunate families, the drugs sometimes took over and the fantasies became realities. Investigator John Little followed his instincts and tirelessly ruled out every possibility until he was left with but one conclusion: Faryion Wardrip was the serial killer who had eluded his office for so long. How he tracked down Wardrip and used the legal system to beat the killer at his own game of deception is a remarkable story of justice served.

A brand new female vicar. An accident-prone nun. Two friends. Two killings. Annabelle and Mary are best friends. But when one gets framed for murder, can the other one save her? Assigned to St. Clement's Church in an inner-city borough just outside Hackney in London, Reverend Annabelle Dixon brings an enthusiasm and drive to her clerical position that baffles her mentor, Father John, but which soon gains her fans and admiration. Annabelle is not your typical vicar, but her strengths prove to serve her, and those around her, very well. When she plans to meet her longtime friend, Sister Mary, a Catholic nun visiting from West Africa, at a local café, little does she know that she will soon find herself embroiled in a mystery of deadly design. Their meeting place is awash with horror, with Sister Mary standing in the middle, shaking, her hand over her mouth and a dead woman at her feet. Armed only with a note, a disappearing dart, vague hints, and a love of cake, this quick-thinking, quick-footed holy woman must gather the clues, pacify a detective, and find the real perpetrator before both she and her friend wind up in jail. Part Sherlock, part Father Dowling, Annabelle is a new kind of detective - one who sees the truth in the most unlikely places. If you love solving puzzles, then this suspense-filled, endearing, cozy mystery is just for you. Enjoy following our amateur sleuth as she careers around London. It will have you guessing until the very end! Included in this book are recipes for: Cherishable Cherry Blossom Cupcakes Cherubic Chocolate Caramel Bars Jubilicious Jam Turnovers Teresa's Surprise Cake Interview with the Creator of the Series Q - So, what makes the Reverend Annabelle Dixon series special? A - Annabelle. When I set out to write these books, I wanted to create a series that featured a heart-warming, smart, sometimes ditzy, ultimately good protagonist that we all undisputedly adore. It is Annabelle - her humanity, her empathy, her big heart - who makes the series so special. With her sometimes partner, sometimes antagonist, Inspector Mike Nicholls, they create some fun and drama as the small town mysteries unfold with humor and intrigue. If you enjoy the TV series, The Vicar of Dibley, Miranda, or Midsomer Murders, I think you will enjoy the Reverend Annabelle cozy mysteries. Q - In what order should I read the books? A - The Reverend Annabelle Dixon cozy mysteries can be read, and enjoyed, in any order. The prequel, Death at the Café is set in London and takes place a few years before the rest in the series. If you do want to read them in order, I'd suggest the following sequence: Death at the Café (prequel) Murder at the Mansion Body in the Woods (coming soon) Q - Why should readers give these books a try? A - Because the Reverend Annabelle series is a gentle, but colorful romp through the beautiful English countryside in a place that is picturesque and peaceful on the outside but one filled with amoral and snobbish eccentrics with all kinds of vices on the inside. Annabelle is a fun, uncomplicated character who is soulful, devout, smart, and funny with penchant for cake. Both Jamie and I feature many English countryside rituals, institutions and customs in these stories. Ultimately, readers who enjoy gentle pacing with a plot that twists and turns, features much fun, drama, quintessential Britishness, and small town murder, will get a kick out of this series. It will make you laugh and you will, I hope, become invested in the characters, rooting for them to come out on top.

This is Part 1 of a new translation with Introduction of Arthur Schopenhauer's massive work, "Die Welt als Wille und Vorstellung" or The World as Will and Representation. This work is sometimes translated as "The World as Will and Idea". This edition contains a new Afterword by the Translator. The first part was published in 1819, with a second version containing additional materials published in 1844. This is Volume II in the Complete Works of Arthur Schopenhauer by Livraria Press Schopenhauer enjoys little fame in modern Philosophic studies but was critically influential on some of the biggest names in history- Kafka, Freud, and Nietzsche among them. Like Kant, he is responding English Empiricism, borrowing heavily from Kant but then developing a bizarre new type of Platonism which is deeply pessimistic and pseudo-Buddhist. Schopenhauer's claim that reason is subject to Will is a critical shift that would be expounded upon by Nietzsche, leading to Freud's entire philosophic project. The entire idea of the Unconscious is rooted in Schopenhauer. From the brutality of this existence where we are oppressed and enslaved by the Will, art is the only escape. Here Nietzsche's Art-Philosophy begins to make sense in light of this deification of the experience of Art. Kafka was a reader of Schopenhauer, and one can see this emphasis on suffering being meaningless and inescapable
Disgust (Ekel, dégoût) is a state of high alert. It acutely says "no" to a variety of phenomena that seemingly threaten the integrity of the self, if not its very existence. A counterpart to the feelings of appetite, desire, and love, it allows at the same time for an acting out of hidden impulses and libidinal drives. In Disgust, Winfried Menninghaus provides a comprehensive account of the significance of this forceful emotion in philosophy, aesthetics, literature, the arts, psychoanalysis, and theory of culture from the eighteenth century to the present. Topics addressed include the role of disgust as both a cognitive and moral organon in Kant and Nietzsche; the history of the imagination of the rotting corpse; the counter-cathexis of the disgusting in Romantic poetics and its modernist appeal ever since; the affinities of disgust and laughter and the analogies of vomiting and writing; the foundation of Freudian psychoanalysis in a theory of disgusting pleasures and practices; the association of disgusting "otherness" with truth and the trans-symbolic "real" in Bataille, Sartre, and Kristeva; Kafka's self-representation as an "Angel" of disgusting smells and acts, concealed in a writerly stance of uncompromising "purity"; and recent debates on "Abject Art."
