Hugh Stanger CEO of Stanger, Inc. throws a birthday party for himself, bringing to Kauai twelve of his corporate employees. He plans for events to fill the week on the beautiful island paradise, culminating in a 'birthday bash' at an elegant restaurant. From the first moment, the plans begin to unravel: someone has cancelled all the reserved activities. Even more sinister is the undercurrent of anger and hatred, mostly directed at Stanger himself, fostered by Stranger's constant criticism of his employees. His barbed remarks are both insulting and personal, to the point that each of the twelve employees have reason to loathe their boss.David Geller, a gifted information technologist and his wife, Fig are among the first to arrive at the hotel, and meet the rest of the group for drinks and pupus. In the bar, Fig meets Starlight Olson, waitress and hopeful tour operator. Starlight offers to replace all of the cancelled activities, to the delight of at least some of the employees.Fig and Starlight soon learn that Hugh Stanger is playing a dangerous game, threatening to reveal the dark secrets of his employees-secrets that some of the employees would kill to prevent coming to light. The two women play a dangerous game of their own, as they try to find out why Stanger is playing the deadly game. The killer strikes before they can prevent the murder. Fig and Starlight then find that they themselves may be the next target for the killer.Murder can be a fun thing when you read about it in a book, but not so funny when you are part of the threat, Fig says. Fig and Starlight fancy themselves amateur, but gifted sleuths as they try to prevent a murder. The theme is both dark and outrageously funny, as the two women develop their friendship in the midst of mayhem and murder. The reader will identify with Fig and Starlight as they become more and more involved in the murder and its consequences for themselves.
