The atlas presents a unique set of abundance data to describe the spatial, depth, size, and temporal distribution of demersal and pelagic fish species over an extensive marine area, together with accounts of their biology. A large number of pictures, graphs and distribution maps illustrate the text. By largely avoiding - or at least explaining - scientific terms and providing extensive references, the book should be useful for both laymen and scientists. The quantitative information on some 200 fish taxa is derived from 72,000 stations fished by research vessels during the period 1977-2013. The area covers the northwest European shelf from west of Ireland to the central Baltic Sea and from Brittany to the Shetlands. Although the surveys extend beyond the shelf edge, only taxa reported at least once in waters less than 200 m are included. Typical deep-water species and typical fresh-water species are excluded. We hope this publication will contribute to gaining a better understanding of the ocean ecosystems.
Mudskippers are amphibious fishes native to the Indo-West Pacific and tropical western Africa. Unlike most fishes, mudskippers emerse to forage, find mates, and defend territories. Adaptations to their morphology, physiology and behavior enable mudskippers to accommodate both aquatic and terrestrial habitats. For these traits, mudskippers have long captured the fascination of scientists, naturalists, and fish hobbyists. Some mudskipper taxa (e.g. Periophthalmodon spp., Periophthalmus spp., Boleophthalmus spp.) are readily observed on mudflats and mangrove forests during the ebb tide. Correspondingly, these conspicuous and widespread taxa are relatively well-studied. The autecology and basic biology for the remaing taxa (e.g. Apocryptodon spp. and Oxuderces spp.) are still poorly understood. The blenniid tribe Nemophini is revised based on the exam?n. of 1,500+ collections. Five genera & 41 species are recognized. The genera recognized are: ?Petroscirtes,? ?Aspidontus,? ?Xiphasia,? ?Meiacanthus? & ?Plagiotremus.? Descriptions are given for all taxa, incl. 2 new subgenera, 13 new species & 1 new subspecies, & identification keys are provided for all taxa except subspecies. Illus. & distributional maps are given for all species & subspecies. Sexual dimorphism, geographic variation & distribution, biology, nomenclature, evolutionary trends & relationships are discussed. More than a third of the species of Nemophini are involved in mimetic relationships. Possible reasons for such interactions are discussed & leads for additional study are suggested. 200+ illus.
