Elizabeth Davis - known in Wales as Betsy Cadwaladyr - was a ladies' maid from Mayrionydd who travelled the world and gained fame as a nurse during the Crimean war. She broke free of the restrictions placed on women in Victorian times to lead a life of adventure. Journeying to many exotic parts of the globe, she came into contact with international events in the horrors of the filled hospital at Balaclava, where she served under Florence Nightingale. Williams interviewed the elderly Betsy and turned her reminiscences into this fascinating account of her life.

Nursing Before Nightingale is a study of the transformation of nursing in England from the beginning of the nineteenth century until the emergence of the Nightingale nurse as the standard model in the 1890s. From the nineteenth century on historians have considered Florence Nightingale, with her training school established at St. Thomas's Hospital in 1860, the founder of modern nursing. This book investigates two major earlier reforms in nursing: a doctor-driven reform which came to be called the 'ward system,' and the reforms of the Anglican Sisters, known as the 'central system' of nursing. Rather than being the beginning of nursing reform, Nightingale nursing was the culmination of these two earlier reforms.
Soyer volunteered his services in the Crimea in 1855 to improve military cooking. This work gives a vivid account of his efforts to prepare nutritious meals for the soldiers using a newly invented portable field stove, which remained in use until the Second World War. In two visits to Balaklava, he, with Miss Florence Nightingale and the medical staff, reorganized the victualling of the hospitals. Consult Dictionary of National Biography.
