Excerpt from The Affinities and Distribution of the Lower Eocene Flora of Southeastern North America Three years ago I made a preliminary announcement before this Society1 concerning the fossil oras of southeastern North America. I have, in the interim, completed a monograph of the extensive and especially well preserved plants of the Lower Eocene, and it is some of the results of this detailed study that are given in the present communication. This work has been done under the auspices of the United States Geological Survey, to the director of which organiza tion I am indebted for permission to publish the following prelim inary abstract. I also wish to express my great indebtedness to Dr. T. Wayland Vaughan, who has had general charge of the Coastal Plain investigations and to whom great credit is due for their com prehensive character.
