The present book is essentially based on the lectures on the chemistry of organic compounds of fluorine that I gave in 1969 at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in Blacksburg, Virginia, as a graduate course. References to material published to the end of 1969 are included. The book is primarily meant to provide the background for such a course, and, at the same time, to be a brief survey of recent knowledge in, and an introduction to deeper study of, this area of chemistry, which has been treated in a number of com prehensive monographs. I would like to thank Professor S. C. Cohen, Syracuse University, for the compilation of the data on mass spectra and nuclear magnetic res onance spectra, and my son, Tomas Hudlicky, and my daughter, Eva Hudlickci, for their help with the indexes. One might well ask why another volume dealing with biological aspects of compounds of fluorine should be offered to the scientific community, already burdened with a literature too massive to be comfortably ingested. Prior toW orld War II this question simply did not arise: there was not sufficient interest or literature in the field to warrant anything beyond the classical monograph pub 1 lished by KAJ RoHOLM in 1937 • RoHOLM's work was directed chiefly toward a better understanding of the effects of fluorides on the general health of workers in the cyrolite industry. However, with the demonstration that water-borne fluoride was a causative agent of both mottled enamel and increased resistance to dental caries, the ground work was laid in the 1930's and early 1940's for a greatly increased interest in the biological effects of fluorides in human beings. During this time and earlier for that matter, work also had been going steadily ahead in the less spectacular area of effects produced in poultry and livestock when fluorine-containing rock phosphate was incorporated in the ration, and when pasture land was contami nated with fluorides released during the large-scale conversion of rock phosphate to fertilizer and phosphoric acid. These latter aspects of the problem had led to the development of a respectable literature in plant physiology, dealing with the effects of fluoride on vegetation.
This volume brings together contributions by leading researchers covering a wide scope so characteristic of fluorine chemistry. It is a monograph of historical character comprising personalized accounts of progress and events in areas of particular interest.There is also much to interest and instruct chemists from other disciplines as a good proportion of the chapters contain a considerable amount of 'hard' referenced information relating to modern organic, organoelemental and inorganic chemistry. Historians of chemistry and technology will no doubt be tempted to dip into this book, and surely whoever addresses the task of commemorating Moissan's achievement at the 150-years stage will bless us all in some measure for its existence.
