Text, ConText, and HyperText presents recent developments in three related and important areas of technical communication: the design of effective documentation; the impact of new technology and research on technical writing; and the training and management of technical writers.The contributors are all authorities drawn from universities and industry who are active in defining and analyzing the role of computing in technical documentation and the role of documentation in the development of computing technology. This first synthesis of their diverse but related research provides a unique conceptualization of the field of computers and writing and documentation.The book first examines techniques for writing online documentation and the value of usability testing. Hypertext is the term coined for the storage of electronic data, whether it be textual or graphic, in such a way that the whole file, in addition to, say, a word processor, becomes an electronic "concordance." This book positions hypertext in an interdisciplinary area created by the overlap of psychology, computer science and information science, in addition to assessing its importance in the field of electronic publishing. Rather than simply summarize everything that has gone before, it aims to provide a position statement from which further work can be suggested. This book will be of interest to researchers, software authors, publishers and anyone concerned with distributing information.
This collection traces new directions in the study of Thomas Moore (1779-1852) and examines the multiple facets of his complex identity, not only as the foremost Irish poet of his time, but also as a lyricist, satirist, polemicist, patriot and journalist. The range of contributors is interdisciplinary and international, and includes leading scholars of literature, music, history and digital humanities. The essays collected here present a new assessment of Moore's career and reflect on the future directions for Moore scholars enabled by digital resources and methodologies. They highlight Moore's far-reaching influence on nineteenth-century European Romanticism, his formative participation in Whig political discourse and his central role in the construction of Irish identity from the nineteenth to the twenty-first centuries.
Reflections and predictions of technology's effect on reading and writing
The volume collects papers presented at the International Conference "Greek Medical Papyri - Text, Context, Hypertext" held at the University of Parma on November 2-4, 2016, as the final event of the ERC project DIGMEDTEXT, aimed primarily at creating an online textual database of the Greek papyri dealing with medicine. The contributions, authored by outstanding papyrologists and historians of the ancient medicine, deal with a variety of topics focused on the papyrological evidence of ancient medical texts and contexts. The first part, devoted to "medical texts", contains some new reflections on important sources such as the Anonymus Londinensis and the Hippocratic corpus, as well as on specific themes like the pharmacological vocabulary, the official medical reports, the medical care in the Roman army. The second part collects papers about the "doctors' context", providing highlights from broader viewpoints like the analysis of the writing supports, the study of the ostraka from the Eastern Desert, the evidence of inscriptions and philosophical texts. The third part is entirely focused on the DIGMEDTEXT project itself: the team members present some relevant key issues raised by the digitisation of the medical papyri.

Effective Documentation is a major sourcebook that offers technical writers, editors, teachers, and students of technical communication a wide variety of practical guidelines based on often hard to find research in the usability of printed and electronic media. The book's eighteen chapters provide a wealth of material on such topics of current interest as the writing of design manuals, research in cognitive psychology as applied to the design of user manuals, and the organizing of manuals for hierarchical software systems. The concluding chapters discuss advances in the design and use of online information and offer valuable insights into the use of graphic information and the development and design of information communicated via electronic media. In many fields of science and practice large amounts of data and informationare collected for analyzing and visualizing latent structures as orderings or classifications for example. This volume presents refereed and revised versions of 52 papers selected from the contributions of the 16th AnnualConference of the "German Classification Society". The papers are organized in three major sections on Data Analysis and Classification (1), InformationRetrieval, Knowledge Processing and Software (2), Applications and Special Topics (3). Moreover, the papers were grouped and ordered within the major sections. So, in the first section we find papers on Classification Methods, Fuzzy Classification, Multidimensional Scaling, Discriminant Analysis and Conceptual Analysis. Barrett's opening essay further explores his original and thought-provoking application of social construction theories of knowledge to the development and analysis of multimedia systems. Some of the chapters that follow look at the effectiveness of particular multimedia systems across the curriculum, from medicine, sociology, and management to language learning, writing, literature, and intergenerational studies. Other chapters examine the implied pedagogy within these systems, or the effects of using multimedia and hypermedia in the classroom.
In Digital Poetics, Loss Glazier argues that the increase in computer technology and accessibility, specifically the World Wide Web, has created a new and viable place for the writing and dissemination of poetry. At the same time, new technologies have also opened up exciting possibilities for scholars of reading and reception in offering them unprecedented amounts of data on reading practices, book buying patterns, and book collecting habits. In From Codex to Hypertext, scholars from multiple disciplines engage with both of these strands.
