This book provides an overview of language education in Malaysia, covering topics such as the evolution of the education system from pre-independence days to the present time, to the typology of schools, and the public philosophy behind every policy made in the teaching of languages. The book consists of chapters devoted to the teaching of languages that form separate strands but are at the same time connected to each other within the education system. These chapters discuss: Implementing the national language policy in education institutions English in language education policies and planning in Malaysia Chinese and Tamil language education in Malaysia Teaching of indigenous Malaysian languages The role of translation in education in Malaysia It also discusses the development of language which enables the national language, Malay, to fulfil its role as the main medium of education up to the tertiary level. This book will be of interest to researchers studying language planning, teacher education and the sociology of education, particularly, within the Malaysian context.
The field of translation studies was largely formed on the basis of modern Western notions of monolingual nations with print-literate societies and monochrome cultures. A significant number of societies in Asia – and their translation traditions – have diverged markedly from this model. With their often multilingual populations, and maintaining a highly oral orientation in the transmission of cultural knowledge, many Asian societies have sustained alternative notions of what ‘text’, ‘original’ and ‘translation’ may mean and have often emphasized ‘performance’ and ‘change’ rather than simple ‘copying’ or ‘transference’. The contributions in Translation in Asia present exciting new windows into South and Southeast Asian translation traditions and their vast array of shared, inter-connected and overlapping ideas about, and practices of translation, transmitted between these two regions over centuries of contact and exchange. Drawing on translation traditions rarely acknowledged within translation studies debates, including Tagalog, Tamil, Kannada, Malay, Hindi, Javanese, Telugu and Malayalam, the essays in this volume engage with myriad interactions of translation and religion, colonialism, and performance, and provide insight into alternative conceptualizations of translation across periods and locales. The understanding gained from these diverse perspectives will contribute to, complicate and expand the conversations unfolding in an emerging ‘international translation studies’.

Studi terjemahan tidak hanya berkecimpung pada topik-topik teknik terjemahan dan/atau prosedur penerjemahan saja, melainkan juga fenomena makna bahasa sumber dan bahasa sasaran, budaya bahasa dan konteks teks terjemahan, serta kognisi bahasa penerjemah. Oleh karena itu, buku ini akan sangat bermanfaat bagi para pembaca (mahasiswa) dalam memahami unsur-unsur linguistik dan budaya bahasa, bahkan mental leksikon penerjemah dalam menghasilkan sebuah produk terjemahan. Buku ini memuat sepuluh bab, di mana setiap bab membahas secara lugas fenomena-fenomena kebahasaan dalam ranah terjemahan. Tiap konsep teori yang dikemukakan oleh para linguis dunia dapat ditemukan pada buku ini. Selain itu, contoh-contoh pembuktian teori dibahas secara sederhana. Setelah membaca buku ini, para mahasiswa dapat memiliki sejumlah topik yang dapat dijadikan sebagai topik utama penelitian. Selain keunggulan di atas, buku ini juga dapat dijadikan sebagai contoh buku ajar yang memuat trik penyusunan materi yang bersesuaian dengan Kurikulum Merdeka Belajar. Dapat dikatakan sebagai contoh buku ajar Kurikulum Merdeka sebab pada tiap bab pembahasan buku ini, penulis memberikan kesempatan kepada pengguna buku (dosen dan mahasiswa) untuk dapat mengeksplorasi kemampuan atau keterampilan bahasa lainnya yang relevan dengan topik pembelajaran bahasa dalam terjemahan. Bagian ini menunjukkan bahwa pembelajaran yang memerdekakan seseorang dalam belajar adalah dengan memiliki kesempatan yang luas untuk menikmati proses belajar secara rileks dan nyaman, namun terarah.
