Excerpt from Souvenir of Denison, "the Gate City of Texas," 1872-1887 And nobly has that promise been redeemed. Ten months of public school in every year, free to every child within the city's limit, extending, through a period of four teen years and still going on, isa record which no other city in Texas possesses and one of which Denison is justly prou'd. The single building which was erected at the start has been supplemented by another and another, until the city now owns three brick edifices for the education of white children, and one for colored, all filled to overflowing and half a dozen business houses temporarily occupied besides. Excerpt from The Texan: A Tale of Texas Let's go up South Gabriel, and if we don't start a cat before we get to Bear Hollow we're almost sure to start that big old cat which runs over towards Nelson's pasture, and goes in one of the caves there. It has beat us to those caves two or three times now, and I'm itching to catch it and if Old Lead and Old Hunter strike its trail hot to-night they'll pick it up sure. I guess Roy and Will will want. To go with us, so you phone Will and I'll phone Roy, and we will start from my house at sundown. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The University of Texas Record, Vol. 10: No. 2; July 15, 1910 We have never taken an inventory of our national resources. We are in the position of a man who, when bequeathed an estate, has gone on spending his money freely, and has never taken the trouble to ask what his capital is. Now, however, we are beginning to realize that the resources mav not be limitless; that we must. Know what we have to depend on, and how long we can. Make it last. There are four kinds of resources: our minerals, forests, water powers, and soil. Of all of our mineral resources, coal is the most import-ant. Until about the middle of the Nineteenth Century we had scarcely begun to draw upon this resource; we had only scratched the surface, so to speak. But at the end of the first decade in this century, it will be found that, in the ten years, we have taken out more coal than in all the preceding decades to gether, just as each of the two decades previous was greatly in ex cess of the ten years before them. Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 10: February 8, 1925 Many students show a distinct betterment in daily work after it has been dinned into them that they can frequently weed out mechanical and even logical errors by wondering whether or not their answer seems probable. Excerpt from G. T. T. Gone to Texas: Letters From Our Boys The Opening letter of this volume takes up the story from the day of his landing in America. It will however, I think, make what follows a little clearer, as well as possibly more useful, if I add a few more words of introduction. Two years before, in consequence of very serious losses, my brother had broken up his establish ment, and gone with his three boys into a small four-roomed house in one of the suburbs of London, sending his only daughter (the writer of Part V) About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Texas Mathematics Teachers' Bulletin, Vol. 10: No. 2 Logarithms are introduced for a third time in connection with calculus. The theorem of the mean, and Taylor's formula, find rational illustrations in connection with expo nential and trigonometric series. Many texts in calculus even discuss to a small extent the special transformed series which are found to be particularly well adapted to the com putation of logarithms. They even give as exercises to student the computation of the natural logarithms of cer tain special numbers such as of 5 and of 7. Excerpt from Early Times in Texas I purchased a good Kentucky rifle (with the use of which I was already well acquainted), shot pouch, powder horn, tomahawk, and butcher knife, and thus equipped, with my knapsack on my shoulders, I fell into ranks, and amid the waving of handkerchiefs and the cheering of bystanders I bid adieu to my native village and started for the promised land of Texas. Excerpt from Under Six Flags, the Story of Texas But the history of Texas is far more than a romantic legend. It is a record of bold conceptions and bolder deeds the story of the discoverer penetrating unknown wildernesses; of the pioneer matching his strength against the savage of the colo nist struggling for his freedom and his rights. It is the chronicle of the birth of a people; the history of the rise and progress of a great State. I have tried in these simple readings so to arrange the salient points of a drama of two centuries as to present a consistent whole. And I shall be happy if I shall succeed in awakening in the reader somewhat of the interest in Texas history which has inspired this work.
