Taste of City is an international conference on food and place marketing held at the University of Belgrade, Serbia. The conference focus on food and place marketing, place branding through food and encourage multidisciplinary approaches to place and food marketing and the role and impact of food in marketing and branding of places. Food and tastes are transferred and transported along the routes of mobility, tourism and connectedness in the era of fast communications and travel. Taste of City Conference 2016 is the first academic research conference with a focus on understanding the dynamics and role of food play in place branding and marketing. Understanding the role of food and taste in forming and reformulating the identity of places, influence of food on the image of cities and countries, changing geographies of food and taste are new avenues for research. "Historically, CRT follows the notion that there is considerable White bias evident in education and society generally (Bimper, 2017). Studies carried out by Ladson Billings believe that there is clear marginalisation regarding students coming from a BME background and in particular, those students for whom English is not their first language (Carrera, 2019). The author further examined the start of the movement for CRT. CRT began when a small group of activists wanted to understand better race, racism and power (Allen, 2017). The first real CRT movement began by focusing their attention on issues relating to conventional civil rights and ethnic study discourses which existed. They began by really questioning the liberal order addressing equality theory, legal reasoning, rationalism and the fundamental principles of constitutional law in America (Dixon, James, & Frieson, 2018). Regardless of the fact that CRT originated from a movement within Law it did, however, move beyond that discipline. The author further established within her research that educators in the main link themselves to CRT quite holistically (Garcia & Velez, 2018). Educational theorists apply CRT quite loosely to HEIs under the guise of school discipline and hierarchy, tracking, controversies over curriculum and history, IQ and achievement testing. It appears that literary work possesses eternal temporal validity due to its autonomous aesthetic value, whereas criticism provides points of view having temporary and transitory significance. Despite such claims, the vector of methodology in our series of books, dealing with the history of English literature, relies on Viktor Shklovsky, T. S. Eliot, Mikhail Bakhtin, and especially Yuri Tynyanov, whose main reasoning would be that literature is a system of dominant, central and peripheral, marginalized elements – to us, “tradition” (centre) versus “innovation” (margin) engaged in a “battle” for supremacy, demarginalization, and the right to form a new literary system – and the development or historical advancement of literature is the substitution of systems. Roman Jakobson and French structuralism, on the whole, later Linda Hutcheon, with her “system” and “constant”, and Bran Nicol with the “dominant”, to say nothing about Itamar Even-Zohar and his theory of polysystem, to a certain extent Julia Kristeva, and even Homi Bhabha – as well as our humble contribution, by means of the books in the present series, we would like to believe – maintain Tynyanov’s line of thinking and concepts alive, which have developed and emerged nowadays more like a kind of “neo-formalism”.
The Turkish Migration Conference 2016 is the fourth event in this series, we are proud to organise and host at the University of Vienna, Austria. Perhaps given the growing number of participants and variety in scope of research and debates included at the Conference, it is now an established quality venue fostering scholarship in Turkish Migration Studies. Over the last five years, we have seen over 1000 abstracts submitted to the conference and year on year the number of accepted presentations grew. This year, the conference accommodates over 350 presentations by hundreds of academics from all around the World. The Migration Conference attracting such a healthy number of academics is a good indicator of the success and means the conference serving its purpose and offer a good opportunity for scholarly exchange and networking. Istanbul “took the stage” as one of the three European Capital of Culture (ECoC) cities in 2010. In this spectacle, the urban spaces were projected as the theatre décor while residents and visitors became the spectators. The images of Istanbul pile up in videos and posters to show the city in every aspect in which everything becomes mishmash and the message gets lost in the chaos. While Istanbul is depicted as a mystified city through Orientalist representations, this image of Istanbul moves between the opposite ends of the contrasting pairs, and in contestation. “Culture, defined as making sense of the world (Hall, 1997: 2), is an integral part of branding a place, which involves cultural exchange (Anholt, 2005: 140). Mega-events may be used as forms of advertising for city marketing and branding, where the signification is not only about production of meaning but also staging of the meaning. The cities hosting mega-events can be turned into the protagonists of the spectacle by showcasing their cultural products as well as cultural being. Thus, what staged there are the city, its image as well as the events.
