Being lectured on the benefits of traditional martial arts might sound like your old Civics teacher. You just might shut your listening apparatus. But, if Sensei starts talking about his past experiences, students start gathering around. Gather around! There are subtle lessons to be learned. And the teaching is not only painless, it is actually enjoyable. From the well-known articles originally published in KICK and INSIDE KARATE, Tony Annesi offers true everyday stories from his dojo files that integrate budo (martial ways) with daily life and daily life with self-development. Martial artists will enrich the perception of their studies by linking their martial mindset to everyday life. Non-martial artists will look at the arts a new way--not just as self-defense or even as an Asian sort of self-development, but also as a way to see the physical as the philosophical.
Six ninjas from Dojo Daycare go on a field trip to the farm where all kinds of chaos ensues.
Learn the background of Japanese Karate along with the ins and outs of belonging to a dojo with this readable martial arts guide. The Japanese martial art of Karate is not only a means of self-defense; it is also a sport and a philosophy. The Karate Dojo: Traditions and Tales of a Martial Art examines each of these aspects--through the colorful legends, tales, and traditions that are associated with the art--and explains why educators and parents are becoming increasingly interested in karate. This karate book shows how karate training can change the lives of those who practice it, by giving them health, self-confidence, both physical and mental discipline, as well as calm maturity. This martial arts book includes information about: the dojo, the belt system, kata and jiu-kumite, potential and goals, famous dojo stories, Okinawan martial arts fighters, ninjutsu, and more!
In this sequel to Tales of the Dojo, Tony Annesi inverts the intent: instead of LifeLessons from the Martial Arts, he draws Martial Arts Lessons from life, from unexpected true life sources, many his own experiences. The dojo files yield never before published stories that take you out of the dojo and into real life. These are neither adventures nor stories about street encounters. They are about simple, daily occurrences we often take for granted. They hold unexpected truths that integrate budo (martial ways) with daily life...and daily life with self-development.

Now available for the first time in English, Tales of Okinawa's Great Masters, the late Shoshin Nagamine's groundbreaking work, recounts the legacy and life histories of Okinawa's greatest martial artists. In addition to profiles of the legendary tegumi wrestlers, Nagamine-sensei features many of the world's great karate masters, including the founder of the core styles from which modern karate sprang. Tales of Okinawa's Great Masters corrects historical inaccuracies surrounding Okinawan martial arts and brings alive the greatest of the great masters. In this seminal martial arts history and biography, Nagamine-sensei presents the martial legacy of the Okinawan people and, to complement and emphasize what is of greatest importance in these tales and life histories, concludes with detailed instructions for the practice of zazen (sitting meditation). Already a classic in the Japanese edition, Tales of Okinawa's Great Masters is a must-read for all karate and tegumi enthusiasts, practitioners and researchers alike.
The goal is to use the fear of conflict to inspire a deeper understanding of life. These stories are examples that have inspired me and many other students to continue the lifelong study of the Martial Arts. This "Path with heart" can help many to follow their own path to become a better person. This study is moving towards the unattainable goal called completion of character. To be of service to other people is the highest honor. Included is the writer's journey in applying DanZan Ryu Martial Arts in many different Mental Health types of treatment facilities including a forensic maximum prison. From working with the Zenyo martial art of conflict resolution the writer remained safe and was able to help ethically turn violence to a safer resolution for staff, and a better therapeutic outcome for the patient or inmate.
