Tactical history of the Franco Prussian War
Excerpt from Tactical Deductions From the War of 1870-71 The principal task which I have undertaken is to describe the peculiarities to be noticed in the late battles, in which, for the first time, the infantry of both armies used a breechloader, and hence to draw conclusions for the tactics of the present day. The sketch which will be found at the beginning of the volume of the history of the French and German armies may give the reader an idea in a few words of their tactics, organiza tion, and prevailing tone. Strategy and tactics are, as a rule, so intimately connected, that I have thought it necessary to add a general sketch of the operations and of the character of the war. EARL J. HESS is Stewart W. McClelland Chair in History at Lincoln Memorial University and the author of fifteen books on the Civil War, including Kennesaw Mountain: Sherman, Johnston, and the Atlanta Campaign ; The Knoxville Campaign: Burnside and Longstreet in East Tennessee ; and The Civil War in the West: Victory and Defeat from the Appalachians to the Mississippi.
This book offers a scientific interpretation of the field of military knowledge situated between strategy and tactics, better known as operational art', and traces the evolution of operational awareness and its culmination in a full-fledged theory. The author, a Brigadier General (ret.) in the Israeli Defence Forces and Doctor of History, King's College, London, clarifies the substance of operational art' and constructs a cognitive framework for its critical analysis. He chronicles the stages in the evolution of operational theory from the emergence of 19th-century military thought to Blitzkrieg. For the first time the Soviet theories of Deep Operations' and Strike Manoeuvre' that emerged in the 1920s and 1930 are discussed. The author argues that it is these doctrines that eventually led to the crystallization of the American Airland Battle theory, successfully implemented in the Gulf War.
