This monograph presents a detailed review of the systematics of the species complex of Amazonian frogs Hypsiboas calcaratus – H. fasciatus. These frogs have a wide distribution in the Amazon basin and are a prominent component of scientific collections in the region. The review includes a phylogeny based on genetic evidence and also an integrative analysis of genetics, morphology and bioacoustics to determine species limits. The analysis indicates the existence of 11 candidate species, a five-fold in-crease relative to the current taxonomy. Four of the candidate species are described as new species and one is resurrected from a previous synonymy. The review is thoroughly illustrated with high-quality images. Most of the islands of the Caribbean have long histories of herpetological exploration and discovery, and even longer histories of human-mediated environmental degradation. Collectively, they constitute a major biodiversity hotspot – a region rich in endemic species that are threatened with extinction. This two-volume series documents the existing status of herpetofaunas (including sea turtles) of the Caribbean, and highlights conservation needs and efforts. Previous contributions to West Indian herpetology have focused on taxonomy, ecology and evolution, particularly of lizards. This volume discusses the aspects of a phylogenetic analysis that go beyond basic calculation of most parsimonious trees. Practical application of all principles discussed is illustrated by reference to TNT, a freely available software package that can perform all the steps needed in a phylogenetic analysis. The first problem considered is how to summarize and compare multiple trees (including identification and handling wildcard taxa). Evaluation of the strength of support for groups, another critical component of any phylogenetic analysis, is given careful consideration. The different interpretations of measures of support are discussed and connected with alternative implementations. The book reviews rationales for estimating character reliability on the basis of homoplasy, with particular attention to morphological characters. The main methods for character weighting and their practical implementation, several of them unique to TNT, are discussed ad libitum.
